Nature's Work of Art

I see a work of art
shimmering in the light.
Before the sun goes down,
it hits it just right
to make a rainbow effect
within silken lines,
and I see its creator
resting on my chimes.
Soon she'll come out
and go to her lair
and then her masterpiece
she'll soon repair.
A yellow eye is tattooed
on her abdomen of beige.
It is quite noticeable
when she takes center stage
within her sticky structure
she built for prey.
With a blackened sky
she felt her way,
around and around,
until her deathtrap was done.
And I'm admiring her work
in the setting sun.
For this little engineer
respect I feel,
and I gaze with wonder
at her web of steel.

Stacy Smith (c) 2002

I wrote this after admiring a web that a barn spider weaved. I have been checking on her every night for the past week since she showed up on my porch. She builds her web nightly...

I love it!
And you read Charlotte's Web as a child?
Spider webs are cool.

Spider's webs come 'round
this time of year...
I keep them close, outside!

Srs,well done.  Sometimes they appear rather quickly and are quite stunning.

Every morning I have new ones all around the outside of the house and they are quite amazing...especially with the morning sun shining on them.
Good write!

This is wonderfully done.

I'm sure your arachnoid friend would be pleased with this poem if it could read it---but then again, spiders are such incredible creatures---I'm sure it already has!

P.S. I have to admire them from a distance due to a phobia than resulted from a traumatic incident when I was a child---my sleeping bag had been filled with them, as a birthday prank at camp. In the dark, I crawled into my sleeping bag and zipped myself into the bowels of hell---hence the phobia!....Since that happened on my birthday, it's a good thing I don't have a phobia about birthdays---hey, maybe I do!--Now that I'm getting older!

Have a good day!

Thanks everyone so much for the nice comments.  I was pleasantly surprised when I got on the message board today and saw all those comments. Linda: I don't blame you for having a phobia of spiders after the prank. That's a pretty rotten prank, especially since it was done to a child. I have never heard of a prank like that.

(smiles) Oh Stacy, this is beautiful, I actually love spiders very much because they really are shy and elusive and wonderful artists! (kiss on cheek) This is gorgeous, sweet friend, I love it, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Stacy, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Stacy~
Welcome to Passions !

Very well done~
I'm an admirer of webs ....
but not particularly fond of creators~

Nothing quite as creatively lovely to see in the morning ... when they are glistening with dew~

A wonderful read~
