The Sound of Contentment

A distant drone across the evening sky
Begs upward glances from a dreamer’s eye
On silver wing a flash of gleaming sun
While I to earth’s dark corner must succumb

Oh, what desire and yearning I can feel
To be aloft inside a bird of steel
Above horizons blackened by the night
With swift wings shining in a sunbeam’s light

Oh, silver bird please lift me high above
The feathered gray of cooing mourning dove
Who greets each day with its inherent grace
In sheer contentment on his perching place

If I cannot fly distances of dreams
To places with exotic splendid scenes
Then let the world remain a dreamer’s home
My eyes still beckoned by a skyward drone

At dawn I’ll be awakened by a dove
So near his song, so distant is my love

Elizabeth,
Whatever you write is a delight. And so is this, beautiful. Sy

So distant, and yet, always closer than you would know.

Thank you.

So near his song, so distant is my love

It just feels that way, Liz... he isn't that far away at all...

So incredibly lovely, I had to go back and read it again. In fact I think I'll go back now and read it a third time!

soon his business might be sold,
then your dreams will turn to gold!

you'll fly over seas like that dove
but for goodness sake watch for the dock my love!

not bad, not bad!  Well it isn't a Santos rhyme but that is what you are paid for isn't it?

The most valuable thing you own is a smile, wear it, and share it.

Wonderful poem of yearning. Chris

Gee, I didn't know we were this far apart.  *not-a-clue gaze*  Great poem, Liz.   I've yet to find a poem of yours that wasn't perfect.
