If but perchance my soul should leave
this shell’s now worn and withered pose.
Would you still love me as you grieve
upon the mourn of waking close.

Would kindest words I have given
to you be kept by one’s heart true.
Would these my thoughts I have written
ingrain the mind and memory of you.

If I should leave before the dawn
of day that comes to window bright.
Spread of me well the green this lawn
upon the break of morn in light.

I leave to all my cherished work
which comes to me alone of night.
For this my love, this silly quirk
that brings to me this love of write.

A pome is wrote from pen of sage
in flow of rhyme and prose you see.
The words of soul become the page
where once my heart was left to be.

And ‘pon the stone of granite pure
I wish to leave my lasting gift.
A touch of rhyme of heart’s endure,
as dunes of sand in time will drift.

Here lies the stone above the head
of one who lived a life of toil.
Thru times of trials this path he led
upon the earth’s brown binding soil.

For time takes but a tick of clock
and words are now eternal held.
As does the slide of swells from rock
this poet writes where last he fell.

Barry

It's interesting to write a poem of this nature...and I know, as I get older, I think more and more of death.  Your poem is beautiful...but made me feel a tear to think you might run out of ink.  Not for a long time, I think.  Hugs!

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Barry, I can understand these emotions so very well, and while I am still growing up and have so much more I still have to learn and understand, I can understand these kind of thoughts others have sometimes! (sigh) I guess it's just important to celebrate living rather than contemplate death for we know it is inevitable so we might as well celebrate every opportunity we get and accept it when that day comes! (sigh) This is powerful, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Barry, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Personally,  I hope neither one of us
runs out of ink for a very very long time...

Thanx dear lady...

a carried candle
whose shortened wick no longer lights
these are the caged songbirds
that are only set loose without chains
when body and soul are parted
Remember me for the good i have done
love me, even though I may be gone.

Maaaan, Barry, this was really good!
Daggers of reality, seeking helpless thought.

A class act here my friend...but as you know...you have contracted for an unstated amount of duets...so...don't even think about it!
And just one more thing...
When you flurb...you have to worn people!
Best Regards, ThisDiamond

Even when the light is gone
or if by chance when comes the dawn
you should be no longer near
your words I'll now forever hear.
Engraved upon my heart are they
words in verse you softly say
they'll comfort me and others too
we will never, ever, forget you.

Interesting piece Barry. Something I think we all ponder. A man with talent such as yours should worry not, your words will live forever in those who knew you.

I said so softly
twas lost amid.
A whisper gone
thought now dim.

After having read all of the comments you have received there isn't much more that I can add to it except "ditto, ditto, & ditto!"
Indeed, you are a poet!---and a very prolific one at that!
