***Innocent Blood***

My breath sticks tight in my throat
stifling a scream, I gag
my muscles shriek into spasms
icy black
grinding every bone

time plays hopscotch with the lines of my fright
my life drawn in vivid chalk markings
people and places I've known ...
shouting their scripted goodbyes
and painting my past too loud

headlights flare out of control
brakes screech
as he swerves
and cuts close in front

in desperate rush...
a lecher on his way to the peep show
his turgid flesh hungry for "live girls"

a vulger animal behind the wheel
drunkenly unaware
that his urgency nearly spilled
innocent blood
across the big highway tonight
***

Something similar happened to me once -- someone obviously very drunk was driving his pick-up with the lights off. I didn't see him after looking both ways, so pulled out to cross the street in my van. Suddenly, the world became the sound of screeching tires and the pickup spinning in slow motion in my headlights.

After we both caught our breaths, he immediately raced off. Jerk.

Glad you're safe.

Thanks for your reply, Mr. Squirrel and for the other acorn too...
I'm glad you are also alright...
There is an exit on I-94 in Michigan...just west of Ann Arbor, where there are a whole bunch of those girlie shows.
And its just unbelievable how animalistic some of those drivers can be when they get in that area...
They will cut across an entire highway, just to get to that exit.  They don't seem to plan very much ahead and of course they are also drunk which probably explains that.
I always dread driving through that area, and I don't know why the cops don't patrol it more... they sure could make more money on tickets over there.
Sorry to say I didn't do that collage... it is awesome though.  It was done by an artist named Diane Fenster and I got it off a website.  If you'd like to see it I could try to send you the link.
Thanks again for the acorn... I already ate the others for supper so this one will be my dessert... they were delicious.

Lyra,
an amazing collage of images, scents and sounds. This was so very real I was holding my breath until the end.

Thanks Keth...
I think that a lot of people don't realize how dangerous those girlie shows can actually be...
I was holding my breath too!

Thanks so much, Sue...
I don't know why the law isn't tougher with drunk drivers...
and the combination of drunk drivers and girlie shows is like gasoline and fire...

Hello Lyra

This was such a powerful write as I felt like a rabbit caught in the glare of the headlights.  Your words gave me goosebumps.

Take care....Sue

All blood shed for a cause
is innocent blood
and that spilled without a cause
is tragedy without time to cry
without time to pray forgiveness

Damned to living inside their own shells
they are pinned to their crosses
and only the innocent
can see their nails.

A stunningly well-constructed poem, Lyra,
with much deeper meaning than just a few
crazy drivers on the way to viewing
porno-graphics.

Innocent lives lost....this piece of writing gave me the chills. Well done. Chris

Thanks so much, Jeff...
I'm glad you saw the meaning in this one...
and you are right about innocent blood being spilled for a cause...
but sometimes...
it gets spilled for no reason at all...
and that would have been the tragedy here, had it happened.
Say Hi to Dulcey...but who is Batman?

I hate to say it, but giving the reader the chills was the intent...
I'm practicing my imagery...
so, if I gave you the chills, thats good.

MunkAge!  You mean you don't know who Batman is?  He is the world-famous cat: known in Korea, Australia, England, America and South Africa!  He's mega cool.  If you get a chance, look at my poem in archives:  Walking With Batman.  He has a batmask face, complete to the cowling and eye slits.  Dulcy will send you a pic of the Dude.  He's our baby, Lyra.  What a total sweetie he is (kinda like you in that respect).   He luvvvvves kisses right on the top of widdle haid!

A frightening event my friend. There is no anticipating such thoughtless acts in the world...we simply attempt to never cause them. Thinking of you. ThisDiamond

When you move to Michigan... please be very careful on I-94 around around Jackson...
just west of Ann Arbor
One of those exits has a whole strip of adult theatres and girlie shows...
and I have never seen men drive like they do over there... they truly turn into animals!

This brought back some not-so-nice memories. In mine, the blood was spilled though. I can definitely relate here, MC. Very nicely done!
