Dragon Fly Love

In the garden within the pond
a sculpture swirled and angled
with grace has rusted.

At the top as if artistic afterthought
bought it too this coupling
was the bright orange body
and iridescent wings of a dragon fly.

He had danced in circles with the smaller
less vibrant female and they had stopped
just a moment before in a circle of continuity
joined and melded in a perfect harmony
on this same place

Now he sat frozen
his wings outstretched
as she released her offering into the pond
again and again then flew away
to hide against a brown branch
her wings closed and silent.

He flew in orbit around my head
his color like the bright orange fish
off the clear waters of Catalina
and the sun drenched his rainbow wings
as he stopped and hovered for a moment
in front of my transfixed watching

then in sure and perfect movement
he traveled the maze of tall corn stalks
dropping behind the lily
and the nodding sun flower
to appear again over the pond.

She did not return.

Her color demure and soft was gone
her completion drained into the pond
and she was away whispering wings
above a different pond perhaps

but he stayed all afternoon
playing with the breeze
coloring the air with his vibrant
and I like to think he waited
for her.

Not quite the same as muskrat love,
but still, the smiling is on-going
from this face to yours...

wonderfully emotive, Martie!
Perhaps, even in the insectoid world
there is love
and waiting
and hope

Superbly written,  mayhaps he was staying
for her....Gosh,  I hope she eventually
came back...poor guy,  out there all alone.

Vividly written, easily seen,  certainly
very well understood....I still remember
those waits....

My cheeks hurt!  Smiling this early in the morning almost cracked my face absolutely beautiful and I was going to put a dragonfly here, but realized yours was prettier.

Whimsical! Magical! In animal totems, "dragonfly" is synomynous with "carefree". You certainly
captured its essence with your
skillful writing!

There are many reasons why your poetry is so special to us ...... one is of course your obvious talent for writing but another is the unobstructed view on the world that you have and the simple things that you think about making us realize that they are not simple at all.  I too like to think that he waited for her.  Beautiful my friend , simply beautiful
