Dedicated to the (WWII) men and women...who fought.
To those who lived...as well as those that are still
out there...never to come home...

Let us never forget them....or why war carries
such a heavy price...for all...

Ears ringing....
Hour upon hour of the enormity of gunfire...
Red tracers curving over the horizon....hot death..
Wham, wham, wham, a never ceasing staccato
of steel shells en route...

No sleep for three days...
The alarm sounding furiously
as souls scurry to battle stations...
Hearts thumping loudly in chests
of so many,  barely men....

Sandwiches on huge platters....
Bologna on white bread....no cooking allowed.
Just cold cuts....coffee, water...tea...
Adrenalin keeping eyes open,
scared, but so determined to win...

Seeing the explosions as invisible death
scatters bodies, some were friends....
Weeping, crying, screams....
Burns, blood...so many casualties...

Fighting for our lives...
Fighting for our country, Mom, Dad, Apple Pie...
Fighting to keep from drowning.
from becoming shark bait.....

Bam! ... Bam!....the guns speak
as barrels glow red from a barrage
of American made munitions...
Empty shell casings littering the decks,
Rolling too and fro from the ocean’s
swells rocking the ship....
An unanswered lullaby...ignored

Seeing the fires beyond the horizon...
Orange glow lighting the clouds above...
Obscured by the smoke of ignited gunpowder
Red, tired eyes straining, hoping that the end
will come soon....for those we fight...yet
can not see...Boys, like us....barely men...
Trying to stay alive....

To come home again...

(tears fall down my cheeks) God Bless You, sweet friend, I too thank all these brave souls who expressed their love and courage to secure our freedom as my heart also goes out to them in tears for the horrible visions they had to see and the families who lost someone dear in that! (BIG HUGGGGGSSSSS) This is powerful, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Barry, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Vivid and charged. The chaos of war has no dignity...but the bravery born is worth celebration. Thank you for reminding me of the blessed times we live in. ThisDiamond

Thank you on behalf of all the mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, and children of all of the men and women who have sacrificed so much, both in the US and Canada, to keep our respective countries free.  This past weekend the 60th anniversary of the first battle at Dieppe was commemorated in Canada.  We lost over 900 brave souls on August 15-17, 1942.  Your poem is a very fitting tribute to their sacrifice.

I also thank you, Barry...for thanking those who've made a sacrifice I never had to make.

So many people do forget... and not one of us in the free world ever should.

This is wonderful, Magnus... When I talked to my Dad this weekend, he shared a lot of his memories of the Elbe... seeing the floodwaters on TV brought it all back. And as I listened, I was once again shocked at how many gave so much.

Thank YOU for this.

Hello Barry

This was such a powerful piece of writing that chilled me to the bone.  I can't even bring myself to watch war movies, let alone imagine what it must be like to be involved in a real war.

Take care.....Sue
