Black Egret

White egret drifts across the nighttime sky
Remarkable and curious to the eye
This ageless beast from off the summer pond
With spread of wing tip reaching far beyond

Appearing black in silhouetted grace
Against the softness of a moonlit space
Carved in the woods above a spring fed trough
From which the black of white has taken off

He smoothly glides across the diamond night
A daunting creature bathed in subtle light
Extraordinary figure memorized
And now engraved into aesthetic eyes

His countenance some day will surely faze
Into a drifting, soft poetic phrase

Elizabeth Santos

They are such beautiful winged creatures...I so enjoy when I am out in the countryside and see them overhead.  We don't have many, mainly blue herons, but of the same family...and they always seem so majestic...

thank you for this little treasure, Lady Santos...

Your poetic eye captures beauty in curve and color...and takes it to the heart.

I had never seen or heard of one before now, and your description of this bird is quite remakable as I went to find one, but I had already seen it within this poem quite well.

Liz, I have a Great White Egret I tamed and net fish for just about every day.  I call him Eddie and he stands 32 inches tall.  He's a very beautiful bird and we spend many hours together.  Your poem desribes very well the magic and loveliness of this magnificent creature.  Thank you for this.

Wonderfully and beautifully descriptive, Liz...
We have white egrets here...and also blue herons...
both are lovely exotic birds and love the swamps.
I've seen them down by our little pond.

Sunshine, I had never seen one here - ever!
And there it was gliding over my daughters house, unmistakably an egret. THanks

Sy,You have many to watch where you are. To me it is a treat, Thanks for your comments

Mysteria, Thank you dear. You appreciate things so much. I just got the first 2 rooms done. You would love them, but no teddy bears, Miss you hun

Enchantress,  I have a very dear friend who photographed the most incredible picture of a white egret. . Since seeing that picture, I always look for them when I'm near their habitat Thank you dear poetess.

Auguste, How enchanting, Eddie the egret! Now that I read your response, I should have put more magic into the poem. Thanks for your little tail
Hugs to Eddie
And you, of course

Noah, You are absolutely right, as graceful as swans, another magical creature. Thanks so much for your kind comment

Mdm Chipmunk. We are in a drought here - a looooong one! It's in the 90's every day, and I've even lost some trees in my yard. That was the first and last one I ever saw here. You are lucky to be able to see them. Sounds like a nice place

VAS, Very nice comment. Thank you so much!

Elizabeth-
Such a lovely picture you've painted.
You write with an artist's brush.
Just gorgeous.
