They Only Sing at Sea

The white curved carving
streak of light on boomerang wings
suspended by great Gulf winds

snow-brightening Kansas scenery
to feed on wheat, milo, oats
child’s trill in thrill to see them white

and where, oh where, the boats?

Where be the waves
to float upon
where is the sand, and surf?

Why do they fly so far
inland
bringing scent of sea
to this dry, dry earth…

clap of hands, wave upon wave
the curved carved wing
of seagulls, brave

to begin the miles
from where they’ve roamed
they only sing you know
when the sea,
the sea,
calls them home.

Karilea
If I whisper, will you listen?...
I would rather be silent and write, than speak loudly and be bound

Lovely Sunshine!
But what are they doing so far inland?
We have plenty of them here but I'm only
a couple of blocks from he water...
Beautiful pic as well.

Good morn, Enchantress...why,
they come inland
for their change of diet,
don't ya know...

but they don't sing
inland...
they go home, to the sea
where the waves
lap at their melody...

ROTF...Ethome!

What you did with my names is exactly
the sound they sing!

And yes...they are amazing, and you should
have seen how wide my eyes got when I first
learned that they come so far inland...
when I first moved to the center of the
US...
such a silly gull am I!  [Oh, my pun muse is having TOO much fun today!]

Isn't it amazing how far inland the gulls
fly to forage and feed.....

Like this poem....nicely done...

Like the metaphor for their wings...
boomerangs....

Lovely, lovely.

I didn't know they sang at all. I mostly hear  them laugh and squawk. So sense I've never been at sea, then they've never sung for me.

I love your term of 'boomerang' wings.

I love sea gulls, but I've never had them decorate me, as my daughter has.

When I draw or paint a land or sea scape, I love to include a gull in the sky; it just seems empty without one.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

GS...chuckling with you...

Magnus...it was a pleasant surprise...

Virginia...even a squawk can be a song...if it has the right background music...

(smiles) This is delightful, sweet friend, I too see these seagulls every now and then in Colorado just north of me, this is wonderful, I love it, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karilea, thank you for sharing!

I especially liked your comparison of their wings to a boomerang, for being thrown from sea by a freak storm, they'll still always find their way home, just as a boomerang will.  I enjoyed this very much and as you know, these lovely birds are my front yard view, as are many different types of seabirds.

Karilea-
This really is beautiful, as are the gulls.
I'm so glad you shared this and I'm even
MORE glad that I found it tonight.

Into my library this goes! I love seagulls and I love this poem. So many of the lines were absolute gems.

"The curved carving streak of light on boomerang wings, suspended by great Gulf winds."....perfection!

Thank you!

They have to stay in flight because there are no trees in which to land in Kansas, Dorothy

"Aw", she sez, "that's just so much hot air from Texas."

Yore right, ma'am, that good ole hot, moist Gulf air that keeps those mini-vultures flying

Fool, said my Muse to me, look in thy heart and write.

I love the thought of this, Karilea.  The title is a poem in itself.  I think perhaps they can only sing when they have the orchestra of the ocean behind them.  This is a beautiful poem!

Sun,  this is neat...and yes,  they fly
very very far inland....mayhaps that is
where all of our gulls are?

And I thought you would offer Sy a sticky
bun instead of a biscuit...???...
