She watched him go, that early summer day,
At the gate of the rickety fence
He walked carrying off
his duffle bag on his shoulder
Turning every so often to blow kisses and wave
Till he finally rounded the curve
At the bottom of the hill.
When he disappeared from sight.
With a sigh
She glance along that fence
At the fresh turned soil
And newly planted length.
One day, some day, he said he’d fix that fence,
But he never did, just repainted it white.
It must be more paint than wood,
Maybe when he returned this time.

Sun came through the window
Each morning all summer long
But soon the vines were wrapping the fence
Steadying it against the stiff sea wind,
And then one day broke into color
The same day she got his letter,
It was a long letter page after page
Of smooth sailing and stormy rage.
Every page had a hand drawn boarder of flowers
and a white picket fence on the bottom.
With each word she knew
Her love was not forgotten.

Summer heat faded to the fall,
The flowers kept blooming as a color wall,
Morning Glories lasting the days
With stars inside to guide a sailor her way.

Fall began to cool the nights
And the flowers blooming through all the light,
Months ago planted by the fence.
A picket hung loose in vine embrace
Leaving a small gap just a little space.
A small tuff of gray fur
And a few disappearing vegetables
Meant a bunny was visiting her,
Making her garden his table.

She gathered a hammer
A nail, some wire and string
Placed in a basket for the gardener,
An went to stop the bunny raids,
She was walking to the space with her things,
With a broad rimmed hat to give her shade
She’d repair that rickety fence.

She stopped at the gate
And paused, then had to wait,
Up the pathway, round the bend,
Someone was coming,
It was him.
Basket dropped,
fence and bunny forgot
she was off and running
down the path to his coming.
She almost cried
With joy of no longer missing
Then once inside
Cried amidst the kissing.

Fall ended with him home once more,
The picket fence not was mended
She noticed looking out the door,
Maybe it was all as intended
He paint it in the springtime
And she didn’t mind
If it was never repaired,
She had her sailor home
It was what for which she cared.

Yes, wonderfully told story, the vivid detail is exquisite and a happy ending! Wonderful! I loved the tying in of the flowers holding the fence together with his letters. It was as if their love was being held together with color-filled lovely blossoms.

Wonderful piece with only a few typos that were only mildly distracting for this teacher, but that is corrected with minor editing after the intensity of the emotions in writing it lessen. Superbly crafted, Professor, enjoyed immensely!

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
