~Ribbons of Affection~

a birthday poem for my closest childhood friend, Sabra

Our ribbons of affection entwined long ago
at the tender age of six
with pretty crayola colors
we drew our friendship
in varied shades of childlike magic

I adored you then, and I love you still
you were my most cherished friend
a raven haired beauty
with eyes the color of chestnuts
ripened by autumn's chill
and a talanted hand
with a gift for crayoned eloquence

the mirror of time twinkles enchantment
and memories remain un-retouched
fresh as yesterdays innocence
of pajama-clad Saturday morning cartoons
and paper doll families...
with wardrobes of our own design

as I pen this simple reminisence,
my oldest and dearest of friends
I find it hard to believe
that we have spanned more than
half a century
though we've wandered life's meandering paths
apart and together
our affection remains strong
and the ribbons have yet to tatter
~

Now you know that this tied a ribbon right around my heart and I am sure it will hers.  To have such a treasure as a friendship for 50 years is beyond any wealth in the world.  Congratulation to you both and Happy Birthday to your wonderful friend too.  Hugs to you sweet lady.

The most valuable thing you own is a smile, wear it, and share it.

Thanks so much, Sharon...
I still remember the very first day we played together...
Sabra had some lined paper and we just colored in between each of the lines with a different color crayon...
Much of this poem is based on fact.  We used to get the paper doll sets but we never used the clothing which came with it.  Instead, we used up all of our mothers' paper towels for drawing brand new wardrobes for our little paper doll families...
She went on to become an art teacher and just retired this past June...

Thanks so much, Chris... Yes, very very dear memories.  I'm always amazed at how much better things look when we look back at them, than they really felt at the time...
I don't know what it is about memories, but I'm sure glad that they stick around.

Lyra, what a loving tribute of memories to your dear friend. She is so fortunate to have you as a companion all of these years.

I enjoyed this so much.

I am a week behind in reading and commenting on so many poems. Please bear with me!!!  Hugs, Marti
