~* The Little Pigeon And The Rainbow *~

This is a story of an unhappy pigeon
who had never tested her wings before.
On the horizon a rainbow was beckoning,
it’s beauty she simply could not ignore.

She felt drawn by something so strong
and today was a clear, crystal, day.
So off she flew this tiny little pigeon
no one even knew she had flown away.

This rainbow was calling to her she felt,
as she headed to its majestic colored hues.
She soared in the air unsuspectingly,
on a nice day with nothing to lose.

Fanning her wings in the rainbow’s caress,
she knew she could come to no harm.
The rainbow was all she had dreamt about,
there'd been no cause for alarm.

Suddenly in mid air, she shuttered in fear,
a storm arose, and a raging gale blew in.
She fluttered as her dreams faded away,
and she got caught in a real tailspin.

The poor little pigeon was now in a storm
her heart overflowing with dread.
What had she been trying to prove?
She sobbed seeing no rainbow overhead.

The raging storm boomed out words so clear,
”Who dares to enter my rainbow singing a song?”
“I’ll keep you caged inside this prism,
until the next naive pigeon happens along.”

The tears of the pigeon softened his heart,
“You've nothing to fear ”, he did say,
”but if I release you from my rainbow,
tell no one I let you in to enjoy it or stay.”

The pigeon took flight to her familiar nest,
thinking sometimes a rainbow is not what it appears,
and sometimes all that glitters is not always gold,
as disappointment and sadness were her souvenirs.

She flew as fast as her tattered wings could fly,
the rain mixing with her salty tears.
What was she thinking looking for more than she had?
What she had, had served her purpose for years!

The fragile pigeon learned a lesson that day,
In what the raging storm had to teach.
She would be happy with what life had to give her,
and not feel envy for those things out of her reach.

There is a moral to this little story I tell,
Although sometimes we think life is not fair,
The most precious thing in life that you own you know,
Is the smile that you were given to wear.

You smartie you! (you are starting to read my mind.) That is what I was going to tell them when I took her down to feed the pigeons anyway.

Such a beautifully presented story! I have missed so much lately, yet it seems as if the colors of the rainbow are still shining on these blue pages. I wish I could go with you when you feed those pigeons! Big rainbow hugs to you from the Rockies, Kacy and Sara

LOL, I thought Sunshine would be the only one to read this and so I never bothered to look until now.  Thank you so much for reading the kid's story, and she gave me finale away - I will tell Tori on Saturday that is how the pigeons got those shiny necks as they are always flying through rainbows (makes sense if you are a four year old right?)   Thank you all again.

This is a very sweet story, and how lucky your grandchild is to have a grandma to create such lovely stories for her book.
Enjoyed!

This was delightful and your granddaughter is fortunate to have a Grammy who writes poems and stories for her.

Well Good Morning!

I thank you for reading and hope you share it with a wee person.  I write so many children's stories but the hard part is making any into poems for me, but once in awhile it works.  I started reading these to her at age 2, and this developed her own little "rhyme rhythm" as well as imagination, because I would let her think of words to rhyme the endings.  Now that she is 4, she has to be taught real from pretend as it appears she believed everything I said!   Her imagination is wild and now it's my job to make sure she knows what a "story" is, opps forgot that part. She is coming this weekend, so this will be a "practice session" followed by ... this is pretend as pigeons really can fly up to rainbows now can they?  To which I am sure she will say, "Sure Gramma, anything's possible if you just believe!"

Love and enjoy your kids and Grandkids they grow so fast, and there is so much to the saying that you "reap what you sow", I see it in my son and the effort was well worth it!

Have a wonderful day and remember...the most valuable thing you WILL ever own is a smile, so wear it and share it.

I was thinking of rainbows this morning... today is our RainbowGirl's birthday... and somewhat fitting with the feathered theme, I call her Little Chick. *S* So how could I resist reading? *S*

And I'm glad I did... this is delightful! *S*

Sharon...
this is an outrageously beautiful poem for adults as well as children...
I love your colorful smile.
~ this chipmunk is smiling at you now...
did you ever see a chipmunk smile?

There was a gorgeous rainbow in Kalamazoo on Wednesday evening...it looked exactly like the one in your picture...
I wonder if there was a pigeon flying through it and his neck was turning color...

Suthern thanks for your ever supporting comments.

Lyra, Tori is here for four days and I read her this this morning before we went to feed the seagulls and pidgeons at the Quay and her response was ... "How did the ducks get green necks Gramma?", so I said, "Well honey that is another story for tomorrow."  So children are sure an inspiration aren't they?  Glad you enjoyed it, and I wish I could have been there to see your rainbow.

Well, here I go digging for treasures again...
and finding them!
This really is adorable and I'm sure Tori will
treasure it for many, many years.
Thanks for the rainbow and the smile.

And what a wonderful treasure of wisdom this is!  Sharon, this was absolutely delightful, my friend. I'll tell you again ... those granddaughters of yours, are two of the luckiest young ladies I know. Wonderful story ... wonderful lesson!  Loved it.

Best wishes and big hugs,
