my coffee has no clutch
I cannot get in gear
it seems I’m only able
to idle sitting here

it revs up my motor
but when I try to go
I can’t get out of neutral
just why I do not know

I cannot find a pedal
for other than the brake
I step upon the throttle
a very big mistake

for everyone is looking
at the roar beyond the wheel
is this an awful nightmare
or could it all be real?

you say I’ve automatic
for clutch  I  have no need
I only need to look
on the column there and read

R is for reverse
D is for drive
I only need to change gears
and I will feel alive

but what is one, what is two
and three there to the right?
I only have to switch gears
and I can go all night?

oh, no, you were kidding
all night it just can’t be
for I  sat there at idle
until twas half past three

and now to go the distance
I need to make a  stop
for the fuel is at empty
oh, no, the power’s dropped!

oh, my, this doesn’t meet the challenge
this coffee with no clutch
it seems to go forever
with the very slightest touch

eight lines have been exceeded
a clutch it did not take
it seems that what I needed
was an outright coffee brake

how about the first two stanzas and the last stanza?

would that be ok?

hmm, doreen, it seems to lose the reason for the 1st line in the last stanza

if the 2nd to last stanza were included, maybe the meaning would come through

still considering

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
