Chance At Life
By Paul Wilson

I once had it all
I use to say
Then one day
I watched it all slip away

Just a fleeting glimpse today
And you were gone
Hoping you’d stay longer
but you disappeared with the dawn

So many years have come and gone
since we parted ways
So much time wasted
I’ve lost track of the days

Another night is upon me
as it starts all over again
Another chance at life today
traded for a bottle of gin

The temperature is getting colder
As the wind begins to blow
I crawl into my box
As the December sky begins to snow

This battle I fight each day
hoping to win
The booze I depend on
Pulling me down again and again

Another chance at life wasted
Is there no hope for me
Will I be just another drunk
for all the world to see

Another bottle of booze
I wish I had tonight
To satisfy this craving
I cannot fight

Tomorrow holds my future
A chance at life again
Will I throw this chance away
for another bottle of gin?

If you really want to, you can do this one moment at a time. And you don't have to do it alone. Help is out there.
Good luck, I'll be pulling for you.
Hugs, Marti

Paul, I sure hope you don't throw away another chance at life. Like Marti said, there is help out there for you. Please seek some help. You don't have to do it alone. They say, one day at a time. But, you can take it one moment at a time, if you need to.

I hope this isn't an autobiographical poem, Paul....but, if it is...please get help.
If it isn't I hope that it helps someone else.
You wrote it so very beautifully.

Paul, the first part of the poem, I understood well, and the second part, I feel sad to think of anyone so lost.

CSK... Thanks for the read, Glad you liked it

Marti...Thanks for your concern, You have a kind heart.

White Rose...Thank You. Did you know that gin will actually destroy your memory, what better way to forget.. Only Joking.

Sue...Such kind words from one that has more
problems than I could ever imagine.
Thank you for caring.

Catalinamoon... I'm so glad you enjoyed.
As sad as it is this is reality for so many people.

Lyra... At one time this was me, but not to this extreme. Through my strength and faith I won the battle many years ago but like many still fight the war.
I only hope this helps others that need another chance at life no matter what their drug of choice is. Thank You sweet lady.

Sammie... Thank you so much.
I think everyone should take 5 minutes out of each day to reflect & see what life means
and how they can make it better for themselves or someone else.

Ah yes - The solution comes from within... It's just a matter of which corner of our souls it hides..  Eventually it'll surface... and all will be well - Nice write, Paul..

Connie... I salute you my friend.
I to have been free from this evil since 1987
Thank you for your vote of confidence.

Seymour... Thank you, so often people are misjudged. In fact I wrote a poem about judging others.

Vandana... So glad you liked it.

Nan... You understood this perfectly. We must find the courage and strength from within to destroy our demons before they destroy us. Thank you kind lady for understanding.
