                     Roots

Here let me rest a little while.
Where the soil is lush and yielding,
where the trees reach out
in one magnificent embrace of
mother earth, silent teachers
of an archetypal love that history
could not disclose.
Here let me co-create,
to meet consanguine shadows rising
from maternal clay—here in the heartland,
where my dust congealed,  where the
breath is shared again, again...

Moss invades the headstones.
My fingers trace the names,
while souls conjoin and know
that flint spark birthed within the cave
burned hotter still in pilgrims' breasts,
still spreads its heat across a continent,
flashing in the eyes of youth,
smoldering upon the page's edge
and poised to leap and dance
upon the open hearth,
or to destroy.

Enter,  solitude,
and in that place where roots descend,
reach forth as tendrils intertwining
with the past,  there grows
a new tellurian peace
to trace the sun,  earthbound
and free,  still calling
from the ground to sons unborn,
"Remember me."

I spent some time in your state,
and know well the tenacity of Roots...
well done, Sir.

I really love this verse, Dean....
I love the whole poem, but this part stands out because of its progression from the dead to the still unborn, like a wheel of generations, remembering the future...very creative...

I know whose poetry, in part, your writing reminds me of now - been reading a bit at your home page. I can see Robert Frost in your words, are you influenced by him at all?

I have no time right now to go deeper other than to say I appreciate this piece very much..

take care

Thanks to all of you, and to Ms. Severn,  I would never speak of myself in the same breath with the great Robert Frost!  Can an ant identify with an elephant?

Yours in peace,

Dean

Yes, it can. Size makes no difference when we all have an equal to be here In terms of poetry...the greats teach us don't they, and we are always in the process of improvement - especially if we allow ourselves to learn, and accept that we're not brilliant from the first time we set pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard as the case may be).

BRAVO!!! Yes, yes, roots are never forgotten, for when we are silent and we can again be able to touch that tranquility, we then realize that nature will always take its course and the roots will only grow on as our hearts go richer in love and appreciation! (sigh) This is excellent, sweet friend, I love the voice of your work, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet R. Dean, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
