Marking Time

marking time
is that what life is?
marking time

Monday’s laundry
Tuesday’s trip
special number at my hip
has it come up
did I win,
sense of hope
growing thin

Wednesday’s mowing
Thursday’s grass
Friday’s goodness
thankfully passed.
Saturday’s shopping
seeking fun
Sunday’s wisdom
growing numb.

daily regimen
clicking away
routinely rutted
in life’s domain

what of the famous
do they dribble away
the hours, the days,
the weeks they play

click, click, click
tick, tick, tick
minutes, hours
pass the nick
of

marking time
is that what life is?
marking time

reason, rhyme,
marking time?

The Tuesday number has to do with Bi-Mart, a discount store. Every Tuesday, about 30 numbers are displayed, giving their owners an opportunity to win an item. You must go in and find your number there, though. I've never won one of the better prizes. About every ten weeks, the last digit in my number will be a prize that has a value of 1-3 dollars. Anyway, this poem was prompted by considering how most of life seems to be clicking off the mundane with a holiday thrown in now and then and highlighted with some mighty wonderful special events. Often, in the later years, those special events decrease in frequency, especially as one's family/extended family begins to dissipate. Sorry about the heavy thoughts for a Monday...maybe it's because it's a Monday. As I wrote the previous sentence, I felt a flicker of excitement in making a challenge. The idea has completely escaped me, but in trying to rediscover it, I'm wondering if it was something like...Finding the Flicker in Monday's Mundane. Are you up to the challenge?

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
