Food cooked in open places
found its way to other spaces
the family, as a piece, soon learned
to meet around boards in turns

from the morning rooster calls
til junior flew in after balls
unity rested in congenial cases...
here grandma sowed her best laces

Had an odour to itself
items packed on separate shelfs
an ironing board folded up
at dinner table dad would sup

It would open to a family room
parents would take their kids to groom
but the kitchen meant deals of immediate matters
even plans of ventures, talk of mad hatters.

Oh the wonderful nastalgia of the Kitchen! So many great images are stirred by this piece. I can just SMELL the food cooking, and HEAR people talking, and feeling the floor under my feet. Wonderful write, absolutely.

The kitchen is truly the heart of every home and you portrayed that beautifully in this poem, Martin...
I liked it a lot.

Very interesting, and I agree with Secret Whispers' comments, nostalgia's the word!
