Desperate and intent to round them up before
they were heard, she struggled to assemble them
into one accord, to bend them to her will.
Some would be offered up for sacrifice-
they heartily resisted.

Eventual submission was persuaded but
lax fingers let a stubborn one or two slip away
before the lock was clicked.

She angered to watch them go.
The others ran circling away from her madness.
Chasing, first one and then another
she finally tired of trying to collect them
and rested, head in hands.

Seeing opportunity one, hell bent,
dug under and while
she tried to catch it
by the tail and drag it backwards
from its oblivious blunder
a couple more flew the coop.

Determined still to make sense of what she had left
she looked up just in time to see them run
nilly willy over the edge as if
possessed.

The dictator read the decree
inventing realities as justification
has need.

You are hereby sentenced for life-
Everything you have said
can and will be remembered
and held against you.

Docilely she listened; nothing remained
to recollect and nothing really had want
of being recalled and so
without a single thought left
to argue otherwise,
she sat down
let go her grip
and cried.

The cruelty of the sentence is even more poignant, knowing how hard she tried to escape her fate... and knowing how unfair such a sentence is. This is superb writing, dear friend... but so very painful.

For a minute I thought you were describing me chasing bugs! But, then, you always have such deep ways to be so descriptive.....this one is deep...and superb
