This is a little poem I worked up this weekend as a result of Mark Bohannan's challenge to me here, lol.
/pip/Forum70/HTML/001819.html#19

Mark and I used to have fun with little challenges, and his newest one was:
"Suddenly, I have a hunger to go to the ZOO but find that all the animals look like foods to me.   How do YOU see me describing this trip in RHYME divine?  Good luck and I won't even watch the clock on this one okay? LOL"

Ah Mark … ya know I love you and your challenges … I have dearly missed you my friend … thanks for giving me something fun to play with …. Are ya hungry?

~*~

Food for Thought

Young Mark was turning six years old, his birthday was today ...
A sweet and caring, happy boy, his mom would always say;
He was a normal child, except one thing, his mother smiled,
His love for food was something else … his appetite was wild!

It seemed no matter where he looked, reminded him of food …
He constantly was hungry … he was always in the mood!
She needed something that would keep him busy for a while,
A birthday visit at the zoo, to celebrate in style!

She packed a lunch and shouted, "Ready Mark? Let's head to town!"
He came up running, braked and then he gave a little frown …
"What's that?" He asked his mom, "It can't be lunch, it's way too small!"
She laughed and grabbed a bigger bag, and then she filled it all!

"Let's roll!" she said, and off they went, but there was one snafu …
A busy day - they had to park a LONG way from the zoo;
Too much to carry, she suggested lunch stay in the car,
Though Mark complained, she won the battle - it was just too far!

They reached the gate, and in they went - distractions everywhere,
And Mark forgot about his lunch … he didn't seem to care!
"Oh mom! This is so cool!" He yelled, and ran throughout the zoo,
So many creatures caught his eye - so much to see and do!

It kept him occupied a while, he didn't think of food,
They saw all kinds of animals … he had no time to brood!
They looked at alligators, crocodiles, rhinoceros …
Koala bears, some deer and then a hippopotamus.

He wasn't hungry till he saw an elephant, and said,
"Hey mom! How 'bout some peanuts?" but she smiled, and shook her head.
They moved on to the monkeys and he put her to the test,
"Hey mom! How 'bout bananas?" she just laughed at his request.

He saw the bears and asked for honey sandwiches and then …
He saw some great big ostriches behind them in a pen,
They looked like giant chickens and he drooled along the floor …
"Hey mom! How 'bout fried chicken?" She just shook her head some more.

He saw the zebras - asked for licorice ... then came into view ...
Some turtles (well, that brought to mind, his favorite chocolates too!)
The penguins brought up Popsicles … with tigers - came ice cream,
It seemed no matter where Mark looked ... it had a hungry theme!

The sharks in the aquarium, brought fish and chips to mind,
Orangutans reminded him of oranges and their rind;
Some cotton candy looked to him like every lion's mane,
A tall giraffe, with crooked neck became a candy cane!

He saw a kangaroo, and what he said just made her grin …
"Hey mom! How 'bout a pizza pocket?" … "OK son - you win!"
"Let's get some lunch!" His mother laughed, "I'm kind of hungry too … "
"I sure worked up an appetite while visiting the zoo!"

Kit,

Extremely well met challenge!!!  I love your perspective from a child's point of view... Children are so very imaginative as are you, my poetic friend, as demonstrated here in your most creative poetry.  This poem truly brings out the child in us all.

You know that you have NEVER let me down and I love you for that and you know that I am loving being placed back in my childhood again. LOL  You took a spin on it that I didn't expect and it was one that I truely enjoyed.  I know that you have been real busy lately and I do appreciate the time you took on meeting this challenge and I hope it took your mind to a more relaxed area while indulging me.  You poem tells a story without missing a beat and it reads awesomely aloud as well as silently.  Of course, I can't remember when I have read one of yours that didn't.  You have a gift of imagination, REAL talent, and just bringing smiles to us all.  You are cherished and don't you ever doubt that.  Big hugs to you for this one.

This is an absolute delight, Kit...

I must confess that my late older son, Eric had this great big craving for hamburgers.
One time, I took my kids to the zoo in Chicago and he ate 9 hamburgers...
He was 9 years old, so I guess he ate one for each year.
This poem is really a and its making me hungry right now.
~ yummy hugs

Gosh - what a collosus of words and rhyme.
All put together in such a descriptive way.
As a vegetarian, thank God I don't look at animals in this way!!  I only look upon them with compassion and love, and wish I could be more active in promoting animal rights and welfare worldwide.
Thank you for your wonderful read.
