night currents,
liquid moon spilled
over slumbering swells,
drifting without direction
in vast rhythm

a breaking white noise
  birdsong clearing the mists
    the smell of morning earth

Lifting my head, I see everyone has made
the night's journey

four-year old with half the bed.
Wife and I cling to the remainder.
Cats and dog adorn head and feet.
The only casualty?
an arm still roped
to the rough-hewn
   logs
     of
      sleep

I never aimed at reality; I aimed at truth. --Orson Welles

Whoa!!! What memories, what memories you invoke in your chosen words.  Mine are grown up now, and have four year olds of their own, and much older.   And yes, my animals used to share my somnombulant reverie, until
SunnyOne came into my life, and insisted that
my babies should sleep elsewhere (but she loves them as much, if not more than me)!!!.   You are obviously an animal lover, and I think you will find interest if you click on the 'little house' at the top of this post and have a look at my pets!!!
Beautifully written and well chosen words.
Thank you.
John

Oh yes, the family bed, it's amazing how every one, including the livestock, vie for an extra square inch.
The Alpha Male in such a pack usually loses out.

Much amused, I'm laughing with you.
