Summer shadows cast on the wall each morn,
Shifting slowly to where the spring was born,
Smokestacks spewing man made clouds in the day
Night mist remnants begin to burn away.

Watchmen leaving as the workers arrive,
Late complaining about a busy drive,
Stray black cat slips in an abandoned house
Carrying in his mouth a small gray mouse.

Dogs in high fenced pens growl at the morning,
Small children scurry off from the warning
To playgrounds of asphalt and broken glass,
Where only the cracks hold a bit of grass.

The heat grows it’s summer in the city,
The noon will broil and bake without pity.

Gloom

Your poem makes me glad I live on the greener side of the fence, Prof. Strong visual writing, your speciality. Keep on keeping on. *s

"In N'Awlins--it's July--
look up to a jaundice sky--
winking one, angry eye--
it's gonna shine, until you fry"

yep...summer in the city...

sucks.
