~Thorns~

A delicate beauty
she rests atop her thorny limbs
handle her with care
or she will draw blood

those thorns can snag a single thread
unraveling you
out to your edges in freys

she'll cut you deep
and make you bleed
tears of blood
upon your open soul

her perfumed essence enthralls
she beguiles your senses
heady with doom

touch her gently
or your blood will flow a river
from seam to seam to shore
cherish this lovely flower
***
respect her thorns
~

how deep and how beautiful this is - my wife grows roses and one learns to respect them but they are beautiful - this is a great poem - Paul

YAY!!! That's right! (kiss on cheek) We should always treat those we love with respect and when one feels sad or lonely, we should always look up for them and compassionately listen! (sigh) This is wonderfully said, sweet friend, I love it, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Lyra, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

This is so beautiful. So is the rose. Next to tulips, roses are my favorite flower.

Munk-age:
how utterly true to warn of the inherent
danger in deep beauty.  Interesting to think
of the risk in taking into one's arms, the delicate moment, while never forgetting what must be shed if handled wrong.

Extremely well done with originality
on a common theme, but with the delightful
and astute:  Munkster twist!

Thanks so much, Paul...
I have always found it interesting when beautiful creatures are dangerous...
I think that the thorns must have been an adaptive feature which helped the species to evolve instead of die out. Survival of the fittest.

Thanks so much for your reply, Noah...
If you ever give a girl, roses....please make sure that you don't snag yourself on the thorns and make sure that the roses are wrapped in such a way so that she won't snag herself either....
they are beautiful, but their thorns protect them.

Thanks Sue...
I think everyone loves roses...
They are my favorite after daisies and black eyed susans.

Thanks Sandra...
I guess that the story of the rose can be generalized to all of life.
Thorns are her protective mechanism.  Roses are very delicate and in order to survive, they need the thorns...but, anyone who touches them needs to be careful.
I guess this is one flower which doesn't have to learn Karate....its built in.

Thanks so much, Jeff....
that is what it was about.  Beauty can sometimes bring danger...
especially when beauty has such good defense mechanisms.

Lyra, how very well done. I tried to do this with a haiku the other day and failed miserably, but I got a pretty good joke instead, so it wasn't a total loss! Your poem is well-written, and I like the picture with it too.

Lyra...one of my jobs as a florist is to take the thorns off the rose...seems sort of sad in a way, but necessary if you want happy customers.  This was a thoughtful poem.  Enjoyed

I guess I will have to go all the way to California to buy my roses from your flower shop.

And how I love and adore roses and how many times have I been bleeding all over the place from those pesky thorns. However, they protect their beauty and say to the world, 'don't mess with me!'

I was at a garden center last weekend and there was a woman ahead of me asking for a thornless rose bush! The poor man waiting on her was dumbfounded by the question. He finally told her 'you can't have a rose without the thorn!'  Silly woman.

I enjoyed this very much...Hugs, Marti

Thanks Marti...
I have seen thornless roses...but they have all been silk.
Maybe thats what that woman needs.
Thorns have a reason for being there....
roses are so delicate that they need something to defend themselves with.  Otherwise the chipmunks would eat them like we eat the crocus bulbs.

Isn't that interesting...
the thorns can stand up to the drought but the roses can't.
