daylight drew sketches
in the inside streets
and through the hole in the pipe
drops of water fell
in vertical motion
could have been worse
there could have been floods
could have been better
there could have been a sprinkler
and sunlight to pass through
painting a rainbow on the street
but it was not to be

meanwhile
between the sketches
a shadow walked
with dry steps
and dressed in conceit
mentally challenging
the pipe to split
mocking the challenge
of dripping water
to break free
into the heart of summer

there was no breeze
and the air was so hot that
the shadow wanted to walk
under the shades
between tall houses
(after all 2 pm is not the time
to be loitering about
on the summer streets)

the shadow continued
to be adamant
trying to outstare the pipe
to burst out of fear

he took three steps in front
one hopeful look behind
and the wish was fulfilled

he was wet as fresh paint
but he was rather surprised
even angry, so angry
that he started to scream
for he saw that pipe hadn’t burst
but he still was completely wet

and then he looked up
to see the fleeting chuckle
of a little child who
had suddenly decided
to pour a glass of water
down on a desperate shadow

and the shadow wasn’t amused
but his steps weren’t dry anymore

Sudhir, once again, your imagination has swept me away.  To think, of a shadow, thinking, dressed in conceit...the lineation you have left behind in my mind will walk a careful step all day....
