He appears mister middle age stoic
whose emotions are set in concrete,
you'd assume he'd a past unheroic
just a Brooks Brothers, Dunn and Bradstreet,
but just swim in his eyes for a minute
hooded lids hide the bittersweet
of the pain and the pride
of the true man inside
who well knows he's just liquid and heat.

Choir boy sing us a ditty
of the hard bench of your life's loveseat
soft bituminous youth, the steel city
tried to blast furnace into defeat,
from the knuckled embrace of your father
to your dozens of fights in the streets,
where Love was just lust
in the abscence of trust
and rap sheets were it's only receipts.

He went Greyhound and headed for Texas
one small duffle bag full of his life,
ain't it strange how the fates re-direct us?
To four kids in a house with a wife,
but the pain of a past still connects us
to abandonment, anger and strife,
the adulterous whore
threw his heart on the floor
and her paramour tasted his knife.

Choir boy sing us a ditty
full of lawyers and judges and jail,
you'll be damned if you'll ask 'em for pity
on your tight rope probation and bail,
just more knuckled embrace from the father
yankee cowboy no bull will unseat,
he just shakes off the dust
and he knows Love's a must
for a man mostly liquid and heat

He just shakes off the dust
and he knows Love's a must
for a man mostly liquid and heat.

You have this way with words that I just love.  Love's a  must........lol.......at least in my book it is anyhow.  Well done Richard.

Enjoy life, this is NOT a dress rehearsal.

Thank you. A co-worker read some of my poems to local musicians, while they enjoyed them I explained that they weren't written with the intent of being lyrical. This was and it served it's purpose in a bout of insomnia. Poetic license et al.
