Ever inobservant,
I looked but did not see~
perhaps it was
my subconscious
trying to protect me

It was only when
you were so enthusiastic about
playing a traditional Burmaese game
that my myopic eyes
acutely informed me that
you were a mere teenager

So young and already
you were doing
backbreaking manual work
under the merciless glare of the sun
and the determined piercing of the rain,
(subject to the whims of gods above)
so that you might earn meagre wages
to settle the mundane, yet crucial
expenses of everyday living
and perhaps some spare cash
for cigarettes, to puff away worries

Deprived of a life,
you would shovel concrete
endlessly throughout your span

Yet you offered me a puff cheerfully,
willing to share what little you had
There was nothing i could offer in return,
except play the game with you during our breaks
