Building the Taj Mahal out of Hubcaps

I couldn’t help but notice
That when I read poetry
Written by “real” poets
Much of their work seems to be
Poetry, by poets, for poets

Their work reads like
Manicured botanical gardens
Filled with a countless variety
Of exotic flora, precisely arranged

Mine, by comparison,
Would be the fistful
Of flowering weeds
That a four year old
Offers to his grandmother

“Poets” write overwhelming symphonies
With full orchestration
Using every instrument to its’ fullest
Simply, because they can

The little ditties that I write
Are at their very best
Performed on the banjo,
Washboard and jug

So, the question is
Why should a painter,
That knows he will never
Paint a "Mona Lisa",
Struggle on, in the hope
That someday
Someone
May place his offering
On the refrigerator?

simple, wranx...writing should not be a "struggle". Writing, not the icebox, should be the reward and if one does not get pleasure from the simple act of creating, there will never be an icebox in the future...or, as Robert Frost said, "Any man who writes for money is a fool."  Well, that's my slant on it, anyway.

Your work here is good...I like your style,,,and your question

I don't know, to create something is often a struggle. I, for one, can't seem to tie a bushel of words on a string and be happy with the outcome. But that's me. (I flunked English).

Thanks all, for your input

Is not a fist full of dandelions in a child's hand the same as a hundred foot square of prize-winning roses?
I thought art was about subjective context and not merely my immediate sensory impressions.

People write to have a voice. This is the way we have chosen. Why else would people post poems on this godsend of a website?  Why not just leave your writings in the desk drawer, like we did before we found such outlets?

We love to write, and if we could get paid for it, great!  But that is missing the point. We all experience similar events.
We all have similar feelings about them.
We are social creatures, and crave validation in a world that can, at times, appear cold and unforgiving.

Why have the "greats" been published?
Surely it wasn't merely because they were "special" or had altruistic motives to "just write". They were good at this essential point -  They could express life's universal aspects to others, that elicited that familiar knowing nod of agreement.

From what I've learned it requires only:
imagination - that we're all born with
experience - that we accumulate from birth
will to write - which can be garnered
practice - repeating the process, learning.

Don't like their style? Great!
Don't like their motivation, or status in the poetry world? Reconsider where such feelings come from. There is no basic difference between you and them.
BS.

I never aimed at reality; I aimed at truth. --Orson Welles

because sometimes the simple things bring us more pleasure in the end?

Does that make sense? Hope ya didn't want a huge discussion.

Did I say I enjoy your writing? YOu have this knack for telling a good story.

I will not bend to the cowardice of a silent judgement.

Damn! brian sites, this was far better than any response hoped for.

Your comment could stand alone as a work of no small interest on this board.

It seems to encapsulate all that drives us to put pen to paper.

You're preachin' to the choir here.

Temptress, I truly appreciate your support of my efforts, all of our efforts. Thanks.

mycafe, I shall, soon, be rummaging through your deskdrawer.

BRAVO!!! Oh Wranx, this is wonderful, sweet friend, this is indeed a good question but I believe that perserverance shapes an artist and while we may never paint something like that, excellence is inevitable as long as we believe in our hearts no matter how it turns out! (sigh) This is fabulous, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Wranx, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

and the responses here are for the most part, great!  There are days that I don't seem to BREATHE if I can get even the smallest, most inane piece of writing done...that I DID it is what is great!  NOT doing it, [now that Pandora's box has been opened, these past three years] is the WORST form of self-punishment...and even when my muse is moody, I STILL make her exercise....

LOL...thanks so much for the philosophical read....

You know, the more I read "published" poets, and passion poets, I get more out of the ones who write here.(Except Rod Mckuen, who rules forever )

wranx~I echo everything Sunshine said!  I do this to express myself, vent, get my emotions on paper...many reasons...but the main one..I get personal pleasure from it.
I know that sounds selfish but I think it has to be...I do it for me..just like breathing.
I write here at PiP to share and I love my Passions family!
This is great work!

I, for one, can't seem to tie a bushel of words on a string

You said that very poetically, Wranx....
It is all in the way that you look at it.
Who is your audience?
Who would you like them to be?
I tend to write for myself and not take the stuff I write very seriously.
I know that poetry has rules and all of that stuff, but the best poems that I have seen, seem to break all of them, very creatively.

Just have fun with the poetry and relax...write for yourself to enjoy, because if you start writing  for someone else...it starts being work and stops being fun. BTW, I happened to really like this poem.
Just my 2 cents for what its worth.

appreciate your thoughts here. I flunked English too once and had to do summer school for that..today I teach and enjoy teaching the language..I'm also one of the most articulate people I know among my peers..so Wranx..a person can carry his dream of writing as far as he wants to..and if you can get paid eventually, well then all well and good..in the meantime relax and enjoy

Here is something to ponder...:

What about all the "GREATS" (published works, etc.) that do have there poetry performed on a banjo...

That wrote most of all their published works before they were "GREAT"

That wrote for just mere family and friends

How did we all come to know poetry,

...by reading some at some point in time?

Don't sell yourself short

They (the GREATS) can write for symphonies, banjos, octets, rock bands, and even hand clapping b/c of their talent.. is that so bad?

((So, the question is
Why should a painter,
That knows he will never
Paint a "Mona Lisa",
Struggle on, in the hope
That someday
Someone
May place his offering
On the refrigerator? ))

The Mona Lisa is relative to what has been done, what is being done, and what needs, or happens to come next.

You may just indeed paint the next Mona Lisa,

...you take your art to the next level..

Look at all this, just about your thought on the subject wranx..

I had a crooked smile....

You know Wranx…not all the poetry here, or anywhere else is outstanding. But we all write for different reasons, and we all have different styles, and we all just enjoy reading others, and having others read us. And there’s nothing wrong with aspiring to be on somebody’s fridge…cause you know…sometimes what’s on the fridge is the most precious of all.
