This is a long one, well for me it is long.  Tomorrow is my birthday, and these are some free form thoughts that are swirling in my mind. Trust me there are alot more... this thing could have went on forever *chuckles*

Birthdays

They have a strange way
Of catching up with you
Reminding you of time passed.
Making you look back and
Remember the times when
Life seemed so full of options.
Back when you thought you
Could be anything you wanted.

I can remember when a
Good day was spent playing
Outside in the bright sun light
I would imagine my own world
Where things were perfect and
Laughter reigned ultimate power
And knowing when I came inside
I would find good ole mom
Waiting for me with a smile
Full of encouragement and love.

Time flew by, and the rules changed.
I remember a good day being
Getting home from school without
Being in tears, my soul not being
Battered with the cruel words
Other children would spout.
I remember drying my tears as
I would walk home from the
Bus stop, not wanting my mom
To see the evidence of the pain
I held so close and silent.

Rules always change, never
Staying the same, never dependable
I have seen many changes
Yet so much stays the same
The same helplessness I used to
Feel growing up stays with me.
I thought it would fade with time.
I have learned to never count
On anything, it could be taken
Away before I have the chance
To fully enjoy it.

I learned love is not the fairytale
We are taught about in stories
It is hard, and you have fight
To hold on to it, to keep in
Your heart, to keep it close.
I learned that things just aren’t fair.
And I learned appreciation
No matter how well and smooth
Things might be going, at a
Seconds notice it can all change

I learned to have patience
That I so badly needed
I learned that I have a lot to learn
That you never know enough
About anything to be completely
Comfortable within your place.
I learned how to wait.
I’ve been waiting all my life
For the moment that things
Will just shift and settle
For that security that will
Hopefully one day come.

I learned that life is game.
Sometimes you win and
Sometimes you definitely lose.
And mostly you just come out even.

I know I have started my melancholy birthday mental dissertations, a month early. This is good.
Happy Birthday Tara.

Happy Birthday, Tara!  You have hit upon so many truths, and yet, not one reason to not see more birthdays come about!  I liked this...and so good to see you writing again!
