It’s darker than
your darkest dreams.
You held your hand out
and held onto me.
There were so many reasons
I told you not to fear.
You wouldn’t listen,
just hold
and wish for things to change.

Things have been worse
for so many reasons,
but you wouldn’t listen
as you closed your eyes.
I didn’t know what to do with
the tears on your cheeks,
so I stared into space
and listened to you cry.

You just wanted this one thing
to resolve itself,
to work out differently
and give you reprieve.
You wanted to stop running,
to learn bravery
but instead
all you could do
was hold onto me.
‘It’s the silence that scares me,’
you said in a whisper.
‘It scares me so much,
there’s nowhere to turn.’

I couldn’t break your silence
with anything but a sigh.
I had no way to make things right,
and all I seemed to do was chastise.
You pulled away
and watched the lights flicker,
singing to yourself
a sad, forgotten song.

For Stephen; may you eventually find peace in your soul, and someone who will know properly how to take care of you and not run away (though admittedly, you had no right to chase me when I left). We both have a lot to be sorry for. Hopefully, we can both eventually leave it to the past.

Those sad songs must always flow, unfortunantly we are the ones sitting idle wondering how the hell to make it better...

*sigh*

love the emotion of you here Lori!!

You can't be responsible for other people. But yes, there's a special helplessness when all you can do is stare into space. Good one.

I was thinkin' of the tree that went with this poem just the other day...

I love you.

These smiling eyes are just a mirror for the sun.

Again, I'm amazed. With goosebumps, even. (looking down, yep, ya woke the twins!)

You have so skillfully illustrated the simple humanity of confusion, trying to console, the inconsolable...

and I am amazed that such sadness can be so beautiful.
