In the Carolina Breeze

Monday morning came too fast,
(we all hadn't much sleep),
and although you really had to go,
you barely made a peep.

You licked my hand, encouraging
my rise from slumber's peace.
I let you out the back door,
'cause I knew you had to pee.

'Twas but a few more winks
before I heard the bell
begging me to "please get up",
but for what, I couldn't tell.

My neighbor stood there speaking
words barely I could hear,
with sympathy she pointed
to the woods that were so near.

Confussion left me quickly,
replaced by sudden grief,
as I saw the lifeless body
of our girl, Madame Maggie.

"The person never stopped", she said,
wittness to the scene.
My heart dropped instantly
when I realized what she'd seen.

The gate was not secured, it seems,
to prevent your curiosity
from wandering outside the safety zone
of protective boundaries.

Oh, God, the pain of questioning-
the "what if's" and the "whys",
and struggling to understand the beast
that could leave you there to die.

He picked you up respectfully,
and brought you back across the street,
and when he reached your frontyard home,
he laid you at his feet.

He dropped to his knees & tears did flow,
emotions he couldn't contain,
the saddness of his sudden loss,
the anger and the pain.

We burried you that morn,
comfortably placing you in that box
with your favorite quacking duck
and a pair of his old socks.

I believe things in life
happen for a reason,
but I also believe we are not
always blessed enough to see them.

Later that day, we understood
the message was loud and clear
and though we were mornful from our loss
there was happiness in bittersweet tears.

"Congratulations!" the nurse said gleely,
as she loaded our bags with stuff,
"Looks like your due in April..."

What?

Wait a minute.

That's enough.

You really had to go that morning,
I thought it was to pee,
but then I knew, that very moment,
it was to fetch us a new baby.

With death there is life.
We miss you much, and appreciate all the life you have given us!

Oh my god..I love this! Left me crying..I am such an animal lover....I think I have hand raised every animal known to man! This is such a sad story.....but with a very happy ending..congratulations..and my condolences...

(tears flooding my face) Oh my gosh, now you have me flooding in tears, I cried all through this more than I cried during Where The Red Fern Grows! (BIG HUGGGSSSSSS) It saddened me to see Madame Maggie's loss and imagining what you and everyone had felt, but then I cried i joy to see her baby have a wonderful new home with you! (kiss on cheek) I just know she will have a wonderful home with you like her mommy did, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Sydney, thank you for sharing!

Ambermize ~ I'm glad you enjoyed this, with all it's emotion.  Maggie was my husband's dog, only five months old when she was killed.  She had a very short life, but left so many memories, and we do like to think she "left us" to make room for baby.  Great to see another animal "softy" on here.

ecrivan & seymour~ thanks for taking the time to read this lengthy post.  all of your comments mean much.

Madame Chipmunk ~ You're always so very kind and considerate.  Thank you!

Mistletoe Angel (Noah)~ It means much to me that you would read my poem with such an eye...to cause those tears.  It was a very emtional day for us.  The death of Maggie was on the morn of my son's 9th birthday, and on the day we later found out that we were expecting (a baby, not a new puppy).  We did, however, get a new golden the following November.  She doesn't take Maggie's place, of course, just as no person can replace another exactly.  Thank you for your very sweet comments.

and to my husband~ It has taken a while for the words to come, but you & I both shared in the wonder of the life-death circle that day.  Sadness, with grief and anger...and later that same day, happiness and hope.  I love you dearly, and I miss her, too.  I like to think she's still hanging out by the refridgerator/freezer, waiting for you to drop her a piece of ice, or laying on the cool of the bathroom tile.  xoxoxo
