A racing heart and shortened breath,
if this be life, it sure beats death,
the clammy hand that held my own
‘til thread through needles, stitches sewn.

I shook the hand away in fright
and kept a vigil through each night.
I warned Death, “Stay away from me,
or death to Death would surely be.”

I could not cough, the pain intense.
At times, meds robbed me of my sense.
The loss of sleep, hallucinate,
from early morn, ’til it was late.

My veins collapsed, another blew.
The nurses knew not what to do.
Infected chest, intensive care,
which meds to try, which ones to dare.

I rose from bed and said, “Back off,
I need to walk and try to cough.”
With pillow, cushioned ’gainst my chest,
I coughed a little, did my best .

My body, stitched like Frankenstein,
I moaned in pain, but did not whine.
Dragging tubes, IV, I walked,
while nurses listened as I talked.

I said to take the meds away.
I’d handle pain from day to day.
Don’t cloud my mind, I need it clear,
so I’ll recover, deal with fear.

They pulled the tubes from out my side.
The pain was such I nearly cried.
Pneumonia had been let in.
I have one more fight left to win.

Today I rest in my own bed
and can’t recall all that was said,
but know instead of months, I’ve years,
to cherish life through smiles and tears.

So happy to see this, and know you are well enough to write it. And another hospital hell story, they cause so many problems, sometimes.

Michael, my friend...it makes my heart so glad to see this reflective poem from you.  Seems you are a fine example of the saying, "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger".

You took charge of your life, and now you get to live it.  YIPPEE!!

Thank you so much for sharing your very good news with us, Michael...
I am so very happy for you.

In my own case, there is no tumor at all in my bladder, but she took some tissue samples and we will have the pathology report next week......Although, I'm sure its okay....
I'm still nervous.
