I Could Have

a wind just blew
through me
it gave me a chill
a memory
caught by surprise
one that went deep
one I thought
I had hidden
memory of a moment
moment in time
when things
could have been
so different
but like
so many others
a mistake
I had simply
let slip by
I could have
acted differently
I could have
told you
I cared
I could have
I should have
but I tried
to save you
save you from me
and in saving you
I lost you altogether
and then
I didn’t know
it would be
the last time
and now
all this time later
just thinking
your name
takes me back
to then
