On A Journey To The Unknown

0 posted 2002-06-20 08:54 PM

(This really happened in 1957!)

I was born in Texas~this I can prove
We moved to Oklahoma~when I was only two
She said I was already learning to read
This is hard for me to believe, too

Sneaking out~while her back was turned (1957)
I sat there on the curb~as the cars went by
A big mack truck hit me~sending me 150 feet
Doctors told her I wouldn't live~that was a lie

Mom took me home and worked with me everyday
Teaching me how to do~what I had already learned
Learning the second time~was harder than the first
In order to teach me~she had to stay real firm

Nerve and motor damage is what they said I had
The doctors couldn't believe it~the day I walked in
They took me down the hospital hall~showing me off
Proving that I had learned to walk~once again

Even went to school~just like the rest of the kids
Once again I had learned~ to read and write
Did not always make the best of grades
Still I kept on trying~and sometimes I was right

Being slower to learn~than the other kids
Alot of times~I just wanted to give up and quit
But, I never was a quitter~I just struggled on
Just to prove to everyone~I was not unfit

Sometimes, it takes me a little bit longer
To learn things~that come so easy to you
Only after trying two or three times~I find
I can do almost everything~that you all can do

Thank you, Mom, for not giving up on me like
the doctors had done.
If it hadn't of been for all your determination
it was a battle~I wouldn't have won.

What a great story, Sue. I also almost lost my life as a  baby. But I'm still here, too. Good for us, I think

I think maybe it is good that we are still here, too. Cause if we weren't we wouldn't have gotten to know each other.

This is an absolute gem, Sue....
I am so happy that your mom worked so hard to get you back...because otherwise, we wouldn't have you here with us...

And I bet that now, you learn just as fast or maybe even faster than the rest of us...

~ scholarly hugs for learning so well

Sue,
you are one smart chick, for knowing the value of your mother, for not giving up. You have learned all the right lessons and you write amazing narratice poetry.

You told this so well, and I love the tale you told. Some people go down the highway faster than others, but if they reach the same destination in the end, what does it matter? I've never had the tenacity you have exhibited, I congratulate you on it, and on your success.  Well done.

I just knew you weren't a quitter sweet lady, I saw that in class.

You had a good MOM Sue, she deserves a tribute.

And you girl, just write on that beautiful poetry of yours, I always enjoy to read it.
