Summer Song

He plays his lilting magic tune
nostalgic melody of June
the driver with his cap of white
his humor good and smile delight

oh those lazy summer afternoons
dixie cups with wooden spoons
tutti frutti ice cream cones
with luscious, tangy overtones

chocolate eclairs, icy pops
from his freezer neath the counter top
a festival of frosty flavor
a frozen feast of season's savor

cuddly moppets, tiny tykes
skinny long legged teens on bikes
line up to buy their scrumptious treats
a chill to cool the sweaty heat

Pied Piper of the modern day
attracting children from their play
his truck cranks out a summer song
of memories cherished all year long
~

ICE CREAM.....I C E C R E A M !!!
I loved it then, and love it now.  I think I'm more excited than my children to hear the old familiar tune of the ice cream truck.  This was delightful!

Thanks Sydney...
My inspiration for this poem was an ice cream truck which was driving in front of me on the highway...
it wasn't even a Good Humor truck...it was one of those yellow and white striped ones and the 2 guys were just driving somewhere, not selling ice cream to kids...but it just brought back the memory of how we used to hear that truck and everyone would get in line....We even had the Good Humor man come to my high school.
I think just about everyone I know, loves ice cream except my younger son...he would rather eat pasta or soup.....oh well!!!!!

Hello Lyra

This brought back so many memories for me.  Here in Australia we have the same such man we know as Mr. Whippee and you know he is in your neighbourhood when you hear the tune of "Greensleaves" being played from his van.  Thank you for this piece of nostalgia.

Take care.....Sue

Lyra hi there, this is wonderful writing and I really do love it. And the visions it inspired are about to send me to mum’s freezer to steal ice-cream, Mum makes the best ice-cream ever She only started because I brought her one of those ice-cream makers, but really they are so small that she’s not using it. So anyone want an ice-cream maker?

I loved this it was and is wonderful

lots of love

YAY!!! Oh my gosh, I love the ice-cream truck, it has always made me cry ever since I was a boy because the music is so uplifting to me and I feel so happy when I have my ice cream and that new technology and Dipping Dots hasn't rid of this delightful tradition! (kiss on cheek) This is soooooo beautiful, sweet friend, hail to the ice cream man, YAY, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Lyra, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Thanks so much for your reply, Sue...
I haven't seen the real "Good Humor" man for years and years now.  He seems to have been replaced by a yellow and white striped van, driven by a college student....but the kids line up for their ice cream, just the same as always...

Michael...tsk tsk tsk!!!! that was supposed to be a chipmunk noise...

The whole idea of the poem was to get everyone in the mood for summer...and to get you to go out and buy yourself some ice cream in the middle of the night....

I hope you enjoyed it...

Thanks so much, Saunni....
I really think the magic formula for summer is...
kids + icecream = summer

Its amazing how it never changes...kids always love to buy ice cream from the ice cream man...
It must taste better than it does at home...

Thanks Eric....
hmmm!  Does that mean that you are a rotund man with addicted eyes?

I don't usually see too many of them around the ice cream truck....but I do see them in the aisles of the supermarkets...wherever all the fattening stuff is...

Thanks for your reply, Emma...its good to see you here.
I used to have a little ice cream maker also, and you are right...they never make enough of it...

Maybe you should take it off her hands.

Old fashioned is definitely better, Noah...
there's nothing like ice cream from the truck!
Nothing could ever replace that tradition.
The "Good Humor" man may be history now, but there are still ice cream trucks around and there will always be the kids who line up to eat their treats outside....

~ summer hugs
