Catalina Cantata
By: Noah Eaton
6/13/02

Catalina Cantata
I step off the cruise ship into your cobalt blue
Catalina Cantata
Casting precious shadows across your sacred lagoon

Ship to shore and I'm walking down Crescent Avenue
The clouds are breast-stroking the skies
Yachts pull off of Green Pier and flood Avalon Bay
Board up my kayak and I'm seto to sail the islands far side

I stare down into the glass floor of the boat
Schools of orange garibaldi and spotted calico bass are swarming all around
In this sunken shipwreck of the gardens of Babylon, a seaweed paradise
Hovering like a bat ray upon a place that makes Atlantis looks underrated without a doubt

Here I am in love
With the melodies of
Catalina Cantata
Here I am alive
Lathering some 45
Catalina Cantata

So this is where they put the see in sightseeing
When it isn't even necessary to have a radar screen
Jetting my way up the north coast of Button Shell Beach
Down to the Italian Gardens and onto the lava wall reach

We stepped into Lloyds Confectionary sometime around 1 P.M and got salt water taffy
Sun-tanned our shoulders and drunk pineapple sherbets on Descanso Beach
Headed down to Lovers Cove and snorkeled in the jealous tourmaline depths
Once you get to the bottom you can't run out of things to preach

Here I am in love
With the melodies of
Catalina Cantata
Here I am alive
Lathering some 45
Catalina Cantata

Caught sight of flying fish as the sun began to fall down
Fish and chips and Italian soda and an inverse frown
Now I know where the buffalo still roam
Up on Catalina Canyon where Arabic cowboys ride upon El Rancho Escondito

We ended the long day with an aimless traipse down into Avalon
I watched the picture disappear as the boat took me away
But I hopped down the streets of Newport all the way to the hotel humming the island songs
With souvernirs to cherish and images caught behind my blue shades

Here I am in love
With the melodies of
Catalina Cantata
Here I am alive
Lathering some 45
Catalina Cantata

Noah

I love Catalina Island.  I spend much time as a girl there..my parents honeymooned there..one of my first loves lived there.  Your poem captured it wonderfully!

Twenty six miles across the sea Santa Catalina is a waiting for me...I visited several times when I lived in Long Beach...
I still have a picture on my wall of me and an ex girlfriend enjoying the island...
It will stay unless Jin tells me the wall has to fall...she already had me take a few down...ha
You write a very descriptive view of the island...
Have you ever thought of becoming a travel writer?

Love and warm stuff
As always
Mushy

Breathe through the heat of our desire
Thy coolness and they balm
Let sense be dumb let flesh retire
Speak through the eathquake wind and fire

Noah, as you must know, Catalina Island is one of my favorite places in the country. You described it beautifully. I wish I had been there.
