My Dad

my dad wrote
with words that spoke
ofdebauchery,
cunning and lust

he also wrote words
of compassion
for animals in the wind
birds of the flock

he wrote of the love
for his dog
how willing, he knew,
his dog would be
to lie beside him
in his last bed of life

and how sorry he felt
he could not bring himself
to do the same, for him,
when he bid his farewell
to his wonderful companion

so much of Dad’s life
seemed to evidence
that his energy and mind
were for his interest and his gain

yet the companions, his dogs,
who held unconditional love for him
held his very heart,
his very soul

he lay the night, once,
with a mare about to foal,
yet, he had not the fortitude
to do the same
for human family or friend

he possessed so much love
but had trouble in its spending

and still,
I always felt loved,
what was it, how did I know?
Somehow, I just did.
Not just because he was my father,
there was something more, I can’t explain.

I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

VAS,
if you felt loved that is all that is important. Good write, very descriptive.

A lovely poem, Vas...
You felt loved simply because you WERE loved.

There are some men who just cannot get it across to another human how deeply they feel...
all they can do it go about life, giving the best they can in ways only comfortable to them...
thanks for sharing, Virginia...

Hi Virginia,

i wasn't too sure about how to comment on this one...are you feeling sad because your dad knew how to express his love openly for animals but not for his immediate family? or are you feeling a little bit ashamed of him because he did things "for interest and for gain"?

i think this is a multi-layered poem and you captured various dimensions of your dad..to end it off by saying you felt loved is enough for this reader....

hope life's well
