Canary
By: Noah Eaton
6/10/02

She was strong
She was free
She was happy
As can be
She believed
What she could never see
She was Jesus'
Smiling facsimile

And she flew home
Home to where the heart lies
Figured nothing
Could stop her flight
She was a mystery
Silver behind ebony
She was happy
As can be

Tell me, why do things have to change?
Twenty seconds later and who's left to blame?
For a heart theft of innocence
Is there really a path of least resistance?
Please, can't you see she is crying
Explain this to me
If you feel you have the heart

She wasn't given a warning
Tear stains on the teddy bear
The birdcage door is open wide
But the canary's not singing tonight
Angel and Elvis posters up on the wall
And the birdcage door is open wide
But the canary's not singing tonight

She was naive
But filled with grace
She found solace
In her place
What went wrong?
I cannot say
She was happy
As the day

Tell me, why do things have to change?
Twenty seconds later and who's left to blame?
For a heart theft of innocence
Is there really a path of least resistance?
Please, can't you see she is crying
Explain this to me
If you feel you have the heart

She wasn't given a warning
Tear stains on the teddy bear
The birdcage door is open wide
But the canary's not singing tonight
Angel and Elvis posters up on the wall
And the birdcage door is open wide
But the canary's not singing tonight

Her hearts still beating
But the canary's not singing
Not singing tonight
Her hearts still beating
Her eyes are still gleaming
But the canary's not singing
Not singing tonight

She wasn't given a warning
Tear stains on the teddy bear
The birdcage door is open wide
But the canary's not singing tonight
Angel and Elvis posters up on the wall
And the birdcage door is open wide
But the canary's not singing tonight...

She used to fly
Now she's fallen to the bottom of the birdcage
She used to fly...
Unaware that life has passed her by...

(Sorry to return on a sad note, I was in San Diego for the first three days this past week and when I walked down the downtown part, it was so depressing seeing the homeless and people crying and then when I came home my pet canary Colonel Mustard was dead and it kind of reminded me of that and broke my heart)

Ah Noah, I am so sorry about your pet canary!
I have a pet bird also, a budgie, named
Casey, and you can become so attached to pets.

I was really worried about where you could be..
you graduated and then disappeared on me!
I am so happy you're back home here where you belong!
I've missed your beautiful poetry, wonderful replies and smiling face!

~Welcome Home Hugs~

A cry from the depths of the heart Noah!
Why do things have to change......Too bad it's the way time passes and time and unforseen occurences befall all people.......Some say there's no getting out of this one alive....I don't believe that....JMHO!
Despite all of that it's good to have you back!

The effect of the spirit of this peace is quite stunning, especially when I read what it's specifically about.  You have a very sweet soul, Noah.

Oh Noah...this brought tears to my eyes

I'm so sorry about your canary...I wish there was something I could do to take away your pain. I'm so sorry
And anytime, seeing anyone in pain, is so difficult...you've been through so much in a short time.  Feel better hunny...

And still...a beautiful, heartfelt peice...you are amazing...

'tis is indeed a sadsong ballad, Noah, and
my sincere sympathies on the loss of your pet.
I know, my friend, how close we can get,
to loving our special friends, and vice versa, happily.

Still, a moving and enthralling ballad,
every word ringing with the despair
of the writer.

Sorry again, Noah, for Colonel's passing.....sigh.

Noah

There is no stopping death, it takes the things we love sometimes...and that is sad, but just the way of things.  I just got a canary for my husband for our 22nd aniversary...his name is Twotwo..he sings so beautifully!  I can understand your attachment.  Heart hugs for your loss.

Oh, so sorry about your little canary.
I bet San Diego was fun, before you went downtown anyway. You must email and tell me about the sights you saw, and all about Catalina Island.(I miss it)

I'm so sorry about Colonel Mustard... it's so hard to lose someone or something that's brought only joy into our lives.

This is a beautiful, haunting write, M'toe.
