A Certain Degree of Attitude

Here I go again on that wind of road
the one with the precipice on one side
and the sharp rocks on the other
you know the one where the road crew can’t reach
cause fixing this one takes courage
and a certain degree of attitude

So this is the one I’m on you see
and I have stopped at this hair pin curve
and I can’t really see if anything is coming
but I know there is only room for me
if I’m careful
so I gather myself together
but I find I cannot slither around these rocks
they are sharp and I’m bleeding fear

So I close my eyes
and I remember how my father taught me
to cross a river on the rocks
it takes a straight back and a sure foot
and an attitude
and you just do it like you were not in danger
of tumbling into a raging current
you do it with a meadow of grass below you
and your father’s smile
----------

Cave Filled

Across the curve of southern coast
eroded time has left a mark
in caves that centuries have birthed
from rise and fall of breathing earth

Yet there I touch the little child
who only yesterday was caught
barefoot in clear water troth
that families with children sought

She scrambled up the cliff just now
surrounded by the scent of sea
and watched the sea lion’s lazy lay
drenched by salt and sea and day

That child not me, for blond not dark
she had the same joy I recall
that lit her face in timeless glee
she could be your child in another sea

and in that cave of which I spoke
some words engraved on rocks I saw
as timeless as the wind blown tree
and ageless as serenity

For I saw carved boldly in the stone
etched with my breathless watch of youth
my father’s name right next to mine
now fifty years since that dear time

So filled my heart with memory
that time can’t take nor days erase
and I swear I heard the echo still
my father’s love the cave did fill.
--------

Both of these writes are amazing Martie!
Wow! I'm so glad you crossed over on the poet stones to share your talent here at Passions because I for one have thoroughly enjoyed your special style of writing.
I love the photo and I wish you the best.....I know your Dad's inspiration will always be with you.

Hold it all so very fast
tresured moments, meant to last,
rocky crags? hold the hand
and stand in footsteps of This Man...

Yes he was a rock whose lessons and example taught you well. Such doesn't ever erode. Enjoyed

Three treasures you've given us, Martie... I read the first poem and thought it couldn't get any better... only to find the second one just as excellent... and the picture is a delight. *S* This is as good as it gets. *S*
