My gramps and I were driving down the turnpike, airport bound
With hopes to get there by the time my grandma's plane touched ground.
We left the house so early I thought we had time to spare
But traffic made the drive a nightmare trying to get there.

"Hey, gramps!", I said, "this traffic's bad! We're moving way too slow."
My grandpa turned to look at me, then smiled and said, "I know."
He asked for my advice...I said there's not much we could do.
"Then settle back, enjoy the ride and hum a song or two."

A small time passed, then I said, "Gramps, what if her plane is late?
Instead of getting there in time, we have to sit and wait?"
He said there's not much we could do and I said yes, that's true.
"Then settle back, enjoy the ride and hum a song or two."

So we were half-way there when I gave out an "Oh, no!" shout.
The needle was on EMPTY which meant we were almost out!
I said, "Hey, gramps. we're almost out!" He smiled and said, "Gee whiz.
There something we can do about it?" I said, "YES! There is!!"

So we pulled off and got some gas. I noticed all the while
That every time gramps looked at me he had a little smile.
It took me years to find out what that smile was all about
But now that I am older I have got it figured out.

I've gone through many trials in life not easy to get through
And worried over things when there was nothing I could do.
I've let events rule my emotions, leaving me no voice
And causing me to suffer although I was left no choice.

What gramps was telling me, preparing me to be a man,
Was...when you're faced with some decision, do the best you can.
If there's no action you can take, accept that fact as such
And never let it get you down or bother you too much.

So now I've finally learned the lesson...that is now my goal.
I do my best to act on everything I can control.
When I am faced with something where there's nothing I can do
I settle back
enjoy the ride
and hum a song or two.

Michael,

Much wisdom here in this poem.  Yep,  settle
back, enjoy the ride and hum a tune or two..
I can hum....but I still have trouble with
the tune part....

Thanx 'Deer for a piece of wise poetry...

’Deer dearest heart Now this is wonderful, you know that whenever I  seek wisdom or need a poetic reminder of a fact of life I can always without fail find the answer in one of your fabulous poems. You never fail me darling boy, if I need a gentle reminder to make the most of each day, and we all do occasionally, I will find it in your outstanding work.

Truly exquisite writing as always your writing shines and I sit here with my head bowed and think the master craftsman has done it again, and you have. This is perfect you’ve taken me into that place of wisdom’s voice so I’ll settle back enjoy the ride and hum a song or two.

This really is excellent writing and I love it utterly utterly

Love and warm stuff
As always
Mushy

Breathe through the heat of our desire
Thy coolness and they balm
Let sense be dumb let flesh retire
Speak through the eathquake wind and fire
Oh

That's exactly what I always do, sit back and enjoy the ride....I don't hum a song or two though for I'm running away from my own sound, never could hold a tone LOL

You had a wise gramps Deer and you wrote this verse so well I can just picture you and gramps sitting there in that car

Just love it

Your grandfather was indeed a wise man. We can all learn a lot from him. Hum a song and smile...Hugs, Marti

Big heavy sigh ... Michael?  Can I just just pretend that you wrote this for me?

It's exactly what I needed to hear sweet poet ... your timing is impecible, and although I know you didn't know it at the time you wrote this, it's just what I needed to hear tonight.  Have I told you how much???  I loved this ...

Best wishes and big hugs
/Kit

This is such a wise and well written poem, Michael...and there have been many times in the past, during which I have tried to do just that....
but it never works for me....
Good for your grandpa...he was the smart one.

By the way...did you get to the airport on time?

~ hugs for relaxing

Deer,
If I settled back and hummed a tune
an opera I could sing
it seems the only thing I've learned
is needless worrying
what if the sky is black today
what if it is blue
you say relax but I think not
That, I cannot do
what if the washing don't get dry
what if the tea gets schorched
am I supposed to hum a tune
and sit there on the porch
what if I should lose my job
and get a payout too
then I could sit back and relax
and hum a tune or two

Keth.
Thanks for the wisdom

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

*sigh* I have missed your wonderfully written wisdom much my friend.

I've hum a few bars myself over the last while. Life has kept me from things my soul craves. You, my friend, are one of those things.

Love you much. ((((hug))))

Michael.....This is just a marvelous write.  I think of how many times I've wound myself up over something I could do nothing about........Exceptional advice and so well presented in these warm scenes with your Granddad!
Loved it!

My Granddad used to say to me...."Never rush into a hurry"  I know what he was talking about now days too!

Glad I was able to settle back and enjoy the ride with you and your Grandfather....
I'll hum something approriate..........Have a nice day!

YAY!!! Yes, I think we all have the right to be anxious sometimes, but life can slip us by if we always let nervousness overwhelm our time when we can be having fun, so it is best to make the most of it because there is much promise in store! (big hugggssssss) This is excellent, sweet friend, I have missed you so so much, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Balladeer, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

And what excellent advice that is. I shall have to remember that myself…and hum a song or two. A wise and wonderful memory, as only you could pen it.

Does this mean that if we adopt your lesson and start humming songs, that we will become old???????? Seriously, excellent writing and such a wonderful way of teaching us.  I guess there is something to be said for wisdom in the eyes of years after all. (Not saying that you are old, just very very well traveled.)

Once again, you've woven wisdom with threads of sheer poetic perfection. *S* I like this very much, Deer one. *S*

But now that I have settled back
Prepared to enjoy the ride
I really need someone I trust
Occupying the driver's side.
Otherwise, what if I sleep,
Relax a bit too much?
I'll end up with a long walk back...
And doubt I'd enjoy such...
Unless I settled back once again
And ignored every care?
Come to think of it... that's my life -
No wonder I get nowhere!
