He had an old Truetone guitar,
With Black Diamond strings.
He’d sit on the barstool-
He’d pick and he’d sing…

He talked about Nashville-
How some day he’d go…
The women and whiskey…
At last brought him low.

He’d pick that old guitar…
And croon a sweet tune,
While courting the ladies
By light of the moon.

His voice held a magic…
At night when he’d sing…
And that junky old flat-top,
Had a mighty sweet ring.

He drifted to Houston…
To play a few gigs…
With dreams of discovery-
And making it big…

Then he missed two nights-
In a down and out bar…
So they checked his room,
For it wasn’t too far.

In a fleabag motel room-
Stretched out on his bed…
The singer from Smiley…
Was lying there dead.

Some said it was drugs,
Some said it was drink…
While I am not certain…
Friend, here’s what I think…

While drinking did certainly-
Play a big part…
The culprit which killed him
Was his broken heart.

You have always had such a wonderful gift of writing GS.  I am glad to see your words here again, thank you for sharing.

I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance~~(Garth)

(big hugggssssssss) Oh John, I cried reading this, this is so very heartbreaking indeed, this reminded me of other artists I know who went through this same tragedy, like the Gin Blossoms songwriter and recently the Alice in Chains lead-singer! (sigh) This is sad but powerful, sweet friend, my thoughts are with you, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet John, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton
