Forbidden

At seven, when the circus came to town
Both my mother and father wore a frown
I was really too young to understand
That a great fear had grown across the land

A sickness was visiting all around
And medicinal cures could not be found
Even for kids to venture out to play
Was thought a risk on a warm summer day

We were forbidden so many places
Especially those with unknown faces
Then months later the tears would come to pass
For kids from school who were not there in class

Even now as truth in this tale is told
I recall those days and my blood runs cold

Ok, I messed with the first line a little.  Sorry Sven.  And maybe I was only six.
If you are of my vintage, dear reader, you have probably guessed what this is about.

Aw Krawdad...I am not sure, but polio comes to mind.  My mother suffered one summer from a slight strain of it when she was young - consequently, during summer months, after she had all of us, we were forced to stay quiet during the hottest part of the day...

Yes, Polio is the sickness that came to mind
with me when you wrote of the heat of summer
and the illness...That was also within the
days of my childhood as well..

Thank You for sharing this...

Challenge well met!!! I think it's only human to be fearful of strangers when something bad starts to happen.

I too remember taking that sugar cube in school when the new polio vaccine came out - and I hated the shots!!

Gosh, I had almost forgotten...
strange how we take vaccines for granted now.
I recall those days vividly now with your poem.
Well done!

This is a piece of time. I appreciate how you met this challenge with such a memory.

Krawdad,
I like this very much!  Sorry to say it's not an era I'm familiar with...but it's a great poem!

Wow, I love how you took the challenge and put it to memories that fit so very well into your theme. I wasn't around for this epidemic that was happening, but now I can see how bad that it was.
