Built to Scale

The architect is ten years old
his model village is the rage
he builds houses, bridges and trains
a hero of the plastic age

little folks in miniature cars
ride around his playroom floor
an A-frame house and big hotel
with furnishings galore

in this teeny little village
plastic people spend their days
earning their plastic salaries
and watching their children play

architecture so immaculate
but built to a tiny scale
pretty streets with plastic trees
and even a lego nature trail

it all seems so idyllic here
in this litte tiny plastic place
they all vacation as a group
in the architect's plastic lego case

but precautions must be taken
when giant feet walk through their town
the parents of the architect
can clean up the room and knock it all down

How I miss the days of my boys and their Dad building and playing by the hour with Lego's. My youngest (22) still loves them and each year for Christmas I buy him a small something. Last year it was a helicopter. He will still spend hours assembly them.  :-)  Thanks for writing and sharing the picture. Hugs, Marti

Lyra,
So true and so well done. In my day we only had cloths pins and paper cutouts. Enjoyed

Lyra...such a cute write!
That's quite the Lego village too!
I wouldn't even hazard a guess as to how many Lego sets we went through with 5 kids...
Boy they hurt when you step on one in socks or bare feet
when you aren't expecting it. LOL.
Enjoyed the read and the pic.

Love this Lyra. It was realy sweet, but for some reason made me remember this old twilight zone, where the humans were in the village, played with as toys by the giant alien. LOL
My mind is off today.

Thanks Larry...If you want to come over and play, I think I still have most of those lego pieces here.  But, it would be a long trip from Arizona to Michigan just to build a plastic town.

That photo is of the Lego village which my kids built when they were young.  I wish I could have captured the detail better, but I took it with a crummy camera.  It was quite impressive in person.

Thanks Marti,  I miss those days also...and then I found this photo to bring some of those memories back.  It was taken in the basement of my old house.  My kids built that when they were quite young, and it looked much better through my eye than it did through a camera.

I found it interesting that your son still plays with Legos at 22.  I seem to remember both of my kids doing that...but I didn't buy any new ones....they had so many already.

Thanks so much, Sy...
I didn't have Legos when I grew up either, but they had something similar but not quite as sophisticated.  I used to love to build stuff when I was little and than I built stuff out of Lego when my kids were young...it was so much fun.

Thanks Martie...I loved playing Legos with my kids.  I think most of their Legos are still here, but my grandaughters aren't quite as interested in them as my sons were.
I try to get them to build with me...but so far, the interest has only been modest.

Thanks so much, Lauren...
When you have young children, your house is SUPPOSED to look like a tornado hit it.
I guess its a kids job to make a mess.
They'll always remember the fun times and the playing, so if you try to keep a perfect house, they won't have anywhere to play and they will probably find ways to rebel when they get older.  It sounds like you are doing a great job of raising your kids.

Thanks Nancy,

We went through lots of Lego sets.  We only had 2 kids but they had lots of friends...and many of the pieces which I still have, are from friends who brought their Lego sets over to play and never took them back.  We have a gigantic tub full of tiny little pieces.

Thanks Sandra...I can understand what you meant by that Twilight Zone thing...
Thats how I used to feel when I had to go into the basement and clean up around their little tiny village.  I felt like the giant alien. I also used to play Legos with my kids when they were young.
I think kids probably like little plastic people because it makes them feel BIG.

LOL you are probably right about those cats...they can wreck a Lego village faster than a tornado can wreck a house.
We never let our cat go into the basement for that reason.

(giggles in delight) Awwwwwww, this is sooooo cute, this reminded me of this Malcolm In The Middle episode where the little boy Duey has a huge domino trail in the making and the dad is plotting on knocking the set down all along and he tries numorous times but gets caught and then right before he gets the opportunity, Duey put the whole set away! LOL! (kiss on cheek) I love Legos, and when I was in California the last week, I got to see LegoVille, that Santa Claus was my favorite! (smiles) This is sooooo adorable, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Lyra, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Lyra,
My kids loved anything with lots of tiny parts to get lost all over the floor and under the furniture.I loved your poem, it's well written and brings back memories.

Thanks for your reply, Noah.....
My kids would NEVER put the whole set away....
I was lucky if they ever put anything away.

Eric used to just throw his clothes on the floor of his room instead of the laundry hamper....after a while, I got tired of picking up after him and just kept the door to his room closed...and when he ran out of clean underwear, he'd have to wash them himself....but the cat always reminded him because Mr.Baxter would get into Eric's room and carry all of his underwear downstairs and lay it right by the front door...
Pretty embarrassing for Eric, but it got the job done....

It would be so nice to live in a perfect little lego town...
but I don't know about the vacations in that Lego case...its probably stuffy in there...
but those little folks really did come on many vacations with us.

Thanks Barry...My feet are probably a lot smaller than yours...and I kept knocking them down also....
Finally, we confined them to one corner of the basement....and that made everyone happy, especially those little plastic people.
