Up A Tree
By Larry Chadwick

We had a lovely crab apple tree,
Standing in our front yard.
Perfect for a five year old,
Climbing it wasn’t very hard.

Every time Larry got stuck,
Dad would talk him through.
Until he learned to climb the tree,
And he found it fun to do.

One day Aunt Rita baby sat,
And Larry just couldn’t resist.
After mom and dad were gone,
Up the tree, he did insist.

Aunt Rita took control and said:
“Larry get down here with me.”
Being smart at five he said:
“I can climb higher, wanna see?”

The woman always in charge,
Quickly decided to compromise.
Seldom has anyone beat her,
And to his dad a pleasant surprise.

Larry C,
We only had telephone poles in my back yard.
And as a child I used to swing the cables from pole to pole. Boy did my mother scream.
Enjoyed

Lauren,
Your day is coming. And I know you'll enjoy it as much as I did. Larry use to cry when he got stuck and beg me to come get him. But I just talked him through the right moves. He mastered the whole tree. It was really cool. Did wonders for his confidence. Thanks.

Sy,
No way! I'd have been screaming too. LOL And thanks so much.

Martie,
Forever...thanks.

You got him down?  I left Todd there, and got some work done LOL.  Oh this brought back a memory or twelve.  Save in a book for him Larry, I gave my son one when he got older with all the silly things he did, and he loves that book.

This was delightful, Larry.  Your love for your family shows through so many of your poems.
This one reminds me of the time when Victor was in pre-school and thought he could fly.
He still has the scar beneath his lower lip, where he needed stitches.

LOL - I'm picturing my own Cassandra up in the tree in front of the house - at 3 - and she was hovering overhead... This is very cute, Larry...

Oh, Larry... I liked this very much... and it brought a chuckle as I remembered some of my own escapades. *G*

About 10 years ago, I rescued a small cat and took him to my Dad's farm. My Dad's dog immediately put the cat up a tree... and it usually takes kittens a bit of trial and error before they learn that they have to BACK down the tree... they like to see where they're going. *G* So I climbed up as far as I could using a ladder... then had to do the old light pole climb on up to the cat. I had on shorts (very bad idea *G*) so my inner thighs were shreds when I saw my aunt later that evening. She asked what happened and I told her, finishing with "I'm just too old to be climbing a tree that doesn't have good limbs!"... only to have her inform me "You're too old to be climbing trees PERIOD!" LOL
Ha! Little does she know. *G* SOMEONE has to teach my little nephew how to scare his mom. *G*
