I saddled the dun, put a pack on my bay-
I told you last night, I'd be going away...
I really did love you, my sweet little friend...
But the farmers are comin', they're fencing me in!

I once trailed with Goodnight and Loving, you know?
Out on the Llano Estacado...
I fought the Comanches, Apaches, and whites:
And slept on the prairies, 'neath star-studded nights.

I'd scout for the Army, kill meat for the rails-
But with every incursion I've not seen it fail...
Like locusts at harvest, they come like the wind...
Farmers, and ploughmen, are fencing me in.

I rode the barrancas back when I was young-
And many a slick-sailing loop I have flung...
But now I am aging, my last days I'd spend...
Far from the barbwire that's fencing me in.

Cowboy poetry is another forgotten art form.
Simple elegance which describes freedom on the open range so well.  good job!  I lived in Houston from 80-85. Alief,Cypress, and last but not least Katy. Great people, but too hot!!!
