The Jackson High School graduating class - 2002
Had big grins on their faces now that high school days were through.
One by one their names were called, diplomas placed in hands
While family, friends and parents sat there smiling in the stands.

My daughter was there, too,and I was smiling with the rest.
Each parent there had little doubt that their child was the best
But I had special reasons to sit there and feel proud
As I applauded wildly when they called her name out loud.

Eighteen years ago I stood in operating room
Ready to assist my newborn's exit from the womb.
Natural childbirth was the rage and I was coach, you see
To stand beside and soothe my wife through her delivery.

As soon as she came out I knew things hadn't gone as planned.
There was a large sack on her back I didn't understand.
The doctor said my baby was not normal - there were flaws
Then sat me down to explain what spina bifida really was.

The spine does not form all the way like normal spines will do.
The bladder, kidneys, brain and legs are all affected, too.
He said there would be constant operations, too, and then
He said it was unlikely she would reach the age of ten.

He said she'd never walk - she started walking at age eight.
With braces on her legs, she learned to ride a bike and skate.
She took karate classes, played basketball with neighbor kids
And got mad at the thought of being called an invalid.

I've yet to hear the first time she has asked for sympathy
And never looked at other kids and asked, "Dear God, why me?"
Accepting her life as it is, she goes on every day
Ignoring every obstacle that may stand in her way.

Her life will not be normal, ruled by catheter and shunt
And there will always be mean kids around to call her runt
But she intends to work in day care helping others who
Must fight their battles every day the way she has to do.

So there it is - diploma passed into her waiting hand.
She has a big smile on her face few there will understand.
So please forgive these prideful boastings of a beaming dad...
The girl who should not be alive is now a high-school grad.

I believe God reserves special children for special parents. I salute you in a parenting job well done.  Congratulations to the Graduate. I too have learned to treasure each day that was not supposed to be.

My best wishes for the future.

A very pretty gal,
And obviously special too,
It's really quite amazing,
She was fathered by one like you!

I know you must be proud,
Of this special little lass,
With the things she's overcome,
I'd say this gal's got class!

Oh, and by the way...the poem's fantastic too dad...it's easy when ya got a special subject though aint it?....

’Deer dearest heart your writing is without doubt so incredibly moving, it simply beams fatherly pride and love. And I can see why, she is a beautiful girl, obviously she takes after her daddy, talented, gutsy and loyal. Wonderful absolutely wonderful writing and I love it. When you write with your heart dear ‘Deer you excel. You are always a cut above and in this you are exceptionally amazing. Your words make me fill up, and truly this is incredibly special.

I love it utterly utterly.

You and your wondrous gorgeous daughter are very fortunate to have each other... I guess you know that, eh?  Give her a special hug from me - I KNOW that this is one of the best days you've seen in these eighteen years. I bet you shed a tear or two, didn't ya??? Fess up, Sweetie...

I don't know which to call fabulous first - the poem or the photo! BOTH are marvelous. Your pride is so very justified! What a strong pair you make. Gorgeous! And so good you didn't listen to the message of doom from doctors. (Neither did my ex-husband/best friend/fishing buddy who has SB - he's 43 and still going strong.)
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR GRADUATION!!! Now the party begins!!!

I have a good friend who has spina bifida.  She is now 58 yrs old and has just retired from Pharmacia Corp...formerly The Upjohn Co. where she was a medical researcher.  She was a colleague of my first husband, and has been responsible for many scientific discoveries.  She is also married and has a teenage daughter.
I think your daughter will grow up to make other's happy and make valuable contributions to society.
Excuse me now please, Michael...I have to dry my tears.....and BTW...the poem was wonderful....you just missed that kleenex warning!

Sincerely - the poem is great, but her triumph moreso. You have every right to be proud of such a fighter... you know though, she must have had some good examples to learn from.

I'm not sure what brought tears to my eyes faster....her graduation or these replies. I want to thank you all very much for sharing in this. I would answer individually but I'm still on the road headed back to Florida with a stop in Charlotte to attend my granddaughter's first dance recital...hmmmm, could be a poem in that one, too )

It's so great so "see" your smiling face again Michael. You are beaming beside your lovely daughter ... matter of fact, I think I see a twinkle in both of your eyes.

This photo reflects such a heart-warming and inspirational life story ... it simply makes this picture all the sweeter.  This is truly a special piece, and I'm so glad I didn't miss reading it - you have every right to be beaming with pride my 'Deer. Beautifully composed and very moving.

Best wishes and hugs

Ah Michael, your daughter takes after her father (poor thing...just joking). She does indeed look like you and I see she's got her father's brains too. You must be so proud of her, not for only doing everything she was not expected to do in her life, but also for the courage to stand fast to her dreams and hopes for the future. Please give her a hug and tell her congradulations from me also. Smiling here in PA right now

’Deer hi there this is quite possibly the most moving tribute and declaration of fatherly love I’ve ever seen. Your piece glows with the love you both share for each other, and this is simply breathtaking in is depiction of your daughters amazing spirit and her determination to make you as proud of her as she is of you. this is really something exceptional from a man whose normal writing is always first class. In this you have excelled even your amazingly high standard and written something that positively shines a light of love. You both obviously have the perfect father daughter relationship, and thank you so much for showing her to us, she is an inspiration indeed.

As mum says don’t stop YOU have a really special gift to write.
