Depression Days

I never saw my daddy cry,
Through all troubles he persevered.
Except one time, I caught his eye
And I could see that it had teared.
The mail carrier had brought a note.
(We didn't call them postmen then.)
My mother read what her sons wrote.
(My older brothers, not yet men.)
"We've caught a freight for other states,
Please don't worry, we'll be okay."
My mother cried "They'll meet their fates."
My daddy said, "We all must pray."

They'd heard tales of desperate men,
Who out of work, had hopped the freights.
What would happen to their sons, when
There were no jobs in other states?
Our folks saw our fightened faces.
They tried to take away our fears.
"They're just seeing other places."
Their smiles could not quite hide their tears.
I know now that their fears were real.
It was a risky thing to do.
Danger itself had an appeal.
They were a daring pair, those two.

My folks kept their fears well hidden.
We never saw them cry again.
Surely Mom's tears came unbidden
Alone with Daddy and their pain.
I was young, I can't remember
Just what month the boys came home.
Perhaps it was late November.
Never more did they care to roam.
They had not found pastures greener,
Though they had ridden many miles.
Both of them were much, much leaner.
They greeted Mother's meals with smiles.

(big hugggsssssss) Oh my gosh, I cried all throughout this poem to the end, sweet friend, it felt so very sad until the end when their sweet mom reached out to them with a meal to help them with love! (kiss on cheek) God Bless her, sweet friend, this is touching, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Joyce, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton
