(This is a repost from a while back. A true story based on the experieces of my cousin who lost her mother, her sister, and her son all in one instant. I pass by these crosses about once a week or so and the tragedy of the situation never fails to hit me as soon as I see the crosses and remember what they stand for. So, in memorium...)

Where Three White Crosses Stand

Three crosses stand along a road
Their story lies untold
About that fateful winter day
When in the dark and cold
Three people left to Christmas shop
For presents for the season
My mother, sister and my son
Now gone without a reason

Their car was not alone that day
Out on that snowy road
Shared by a trucker and his rig
Hauling his heavy load
They say he had been drinking
And crossed the center line
His life was spared, but in an instant
Forever changed was mine

Head on he crashed into the car
Which buckled from the weight
Metal was smashed beyond repair
And help arrived too late
Three occupants trapped in the car
And not one life to save
Three headstones bought, three funerals
All three sent to the grave

Three crosses stand along the road
With each a memory
Their meaning lost by all who pass
But certainly not me
It matters not where I call home
Or travel in this land
For by that road, my heart remains
Where three white crosses stand

It matters not that the passerby
When casually the cross catch their eye,
Know not the story of the crosses.
For you do, I sorrow for your losses

Thank you for reposting this Ruth. I see white crosses all the time along the streets here and often wonder about the story behind them. All we ever know is that for every one white cross, there are many tears behind it.

I too see a cross every bit or so...and I
wonder who it might have been...

Such tragedies that come into our lives
in an instant...but linger an eternity...

Thank You,  you have done this very well.

Excellent writing...families and friends place crosses or flowers along the road here when someone dies in a traffic accident.
A close friend of mine lost her husband in an accident with a drunken truck driver...James
