For you, I struck a match
and lit each candle in the evening sky.

I blew by hand a glass globe and painted it
in marbled ivory and opal tones
and hung it in the summer night
so that you would see me,
not with squinting eyes in the
jubilance of the noontime sun, but rather
in the soft glows of midnight
that filter out the impurities of thought and
light my eyes with the most beauteous
of all illumination

That is the light in which my heart
prefers to dwell

A small sparkle of radiance reflected
within me is all you need
to see into the deepness of my love
and to touch my inner smile of happiness

Elizabeth Santos
