Where no tyranny is tolerable

But What About The Cows? ... ...

A strange dream in which Jaime is both Deaf and Hearing at the same time

1:
Mother has to go on some 'vision quest."
In the meantime,
We will be living
With the Indians in the forest.

2:
One day, around Noon,
My sister leads me
To what seems to be a picnic table.
The Indian women
Have prepared a traditional dish.
It seems to be a cereal grain,
Something like rice or lentils.
They bring me some on paper plates.
In the fierce  tropical heat,
The Indian Women
Don't wear much of anything.
I hug one of my favorites,
Hold her for quite a long time.
Then I experience
The threshold of orgasm
And draw back from her, embarrassed.
What if she notices? ...
She doesn't even know me ...
We listen on the radio
To a program for indigenous people
Broadcast from Mexico City.
As I listen to the music,
It grows louder and louder,
Taking on unusual vividness.
I cup a hand over my ear
But still hear it from the other.
Suddenly I realize
I'm not wearing hearing aids----
That I'm wearing no equipment whatsoever.
Yet how could I be hearing things
As I once did
More than thirty years ago? ...
I turn,
Walking away from the sound;
But find it is still clear and loud,
That I
Can still tell exactly where it is
Despite my distance.
I muse:
Should I report this to the clinic ...
See the doctor?
Have them test my hearing once again? ..
Then the music starts to fade,
Slowly blurs into meaningless noises,
And then, at last, is gone.
And I am deaf again ...

3:
Then one day,
perhaps a few months later,
(as time has no such meaning here,)
Mother finds her "answer."
It is time for us to leave.
I am handed street clothes
Do I remember how to put them on? ...
The car radio is on.
An announcer reads the News.
He reports without emotion
That a baby-killer
Has escaped from some facility.
He explains, laconically,
That every killer.
Running loose out on the streets
Multiplies himself by fifteen times,
That this is a problem for police.
And there is more News:
A blind woman was killed
While trying to cross a road.
This happened in rural India
Where, according to the News,
There are few roads,
And even fewer cars,
Cows wander about,
And cold homogenized milk
Is dispensed
From hydrants on street corners.

But what about the cows? ... ... ...

Jaime

The last man on Earth
Sat in his living room.
There was a knock at the door.

Jaime, if ever I grow deaf [due to Meunier's disease] I shall want to do it as well as you.  Reading your thoughts always leaves me in awe...

Even the cows get bumped sometimes.

you know. . . it's funny that you should talk about cows here. . . because, like cows, this is something that begs to be looked at for a long time by the side of the road. . .

I don't know if that made any sense, but I liked the themes here. . .it's like a dream. . .
