more rambling, that's all...

Life’s Like This
©2002 C.G. Ward

fads and friezes plastered on a wall
take the place of sincerity.
yet if one could expand beyond the frame
of this vintage van gogh print,
perhaps he could catch a gust
that would slide him
into a place of safety,
a bastion of comfortable.

or perhaps I’m just being naïve,
dreaming of a past that doesn’t intrude
on the future like a prelude to sorrow.
it’s a challenge, you know, to face the day
when all you have is a pair of broken shades
to obscure the sting of another loss.

and to think, I used to be superman -
cape blown back like a pennant of strength,
a demi-god of growth… wait, no. just a man.
a man who found there is no shortage of kryptonite
in a world filled with the potential of friendship.

see, life’s like this –
you run and run and run and run…
then stop. wait. look for the choices
you thought you couldn’t face,
because time beats down the truth
with a shrieking voice, belting out the inanity
of trying to hold on to something you never had
in the first place.

well, when I look at it like that,
I think I could bear to slow,
to taste this moment,
and hope somehow, that there’s another.

It's inevitable. but sometimes a man is all that is needed...(and why does everything I type have that naughty innuendo...I was trying to be SERIOUS!!!)

and yes, this is James Dean in poetry. For all the reasons that I said--the pain, the questioning, and re evaluation...think of rebel without a cause...what's the role that is left? There's so much here...it's all beautiful, too. I may be back. But it was that verse that got to me this night.

and? pssst...loving this stuff.

Loved the image you created with these lines Christopher and also the ones Karen singled out as well.

This poem was a fascinating study of mixed emotions and I got from it that the realization of the pointlessness of holding onto something you never had almost leaves one powerless to only hang onto hope of one moment more of something good out it all.

Ohhhh I liked this one!

We should spend less time worrying about when our life is going to end and more on when it's going to start!

Christopher, you seem to have a pretty good handle on life and what it's about.  This one I am keeping.  It makes me think.  Not many poems can do that.  Thank you for this.

...... so .....this is when I'm supposed to say something witty and poetic, something clever that lets the poet know how this effects and impresses......
I seem to be at a loss ......

will ya just know if all I can say is damn?

I cannot top the accolades given, so I shall just join them, with some gentle clapping...and a little since we don't have a smiley that curtsies...

i dunno, that whole "We're not worthy! We're not worthy!" thing kinda summed it up, actually.

interesting, setting bringing the words to surface
it plots the feeling very well...

time has a way of doing just that, beating down the truth...but, if it is, something you never had in the first place, why not let it go?  if it is never "ours" to begin with
then how can we know what we are missing?

look who's talking right??? LOL I am the fastest runner on the planet...and always looking for that "next moment"

When my brevity gets a bit longer than it should...this is where I'm trying to go with it.  I'm beginning to read your poetry as I would a lesson in how I'd like to write.

How does a print become a vintage?

Doesn't vintage indicate authenticity - unless of course you mean to tell me you have a Van Gogh original on that there wall hon...? heh

'a bastion of comfortable.'

Very, very goooooooood...

'fads and friezes plastered on a wall
take the place of sincerity.
yet if one could expand beyond the frame
of this vintage van gogh print,
perhaps he could catch a gust
that would slide him
into a place of safety,
a bastion of comfortable.'

This whole stanza actually...wonderful...I like the image of riding the wind...becoming ephereal in a way. Outside the body...well, that is what it made me think of anyway..

'it’s a challenge, you know, to face the day
when all you have is a pair of broken shades
to obscure the sting of another loss.'

Great image hon..

'and to think, I used to be superman -
cape blown back like a pennant of strength'

Curious - any particular influences here? Songs? Writings? tv shows? heh...no, seriously..are there?

'a man who found there is no shortage of kryptonite
in a world filled with the potential of friendship'

This, I think, takes the metaphor too far...I suggest losing it...

'see, life’s like this –
you run and run and run and run…
then stop. wait. look for the choices'

This caught me, for many reasons.
Many..

Mr Dense Writer does it again.

'well, when I look at it like that,
I think I could bear to slow,
to taste this moment,
and hope somehow, that there’s another.

Sigh.
I do so like that C.

One thing I've noticed during my C's Poetry Night is that you're dropping capital letters. Interestingly, I had a conversation with Jamie about that...I tried it in Horizons. No caps...no full stops at the ends of stanzas...

I kept the latter, but put the caps back in for aesthetics I think...but having studied the technique tonight through your writings I find that I quite like it. Maybe it's your style...hmm..have to experiment.

And so ends my deeper exploration into your recent works...come on...give me some more eh??

huggles you...it's been fun..

K
