(In memory of my mother, Marian)

I think you liked spring because it proceeded summer.
Summer when you flirted with the sun
in evenings backyard, placed like a tether to kids romping swing around,

as the coals melt color similar to the sun setting,
you and he talking quietly under the tree, and me
a driveway scatter of little girl running barefoot and unsweatered.

You wore your summer skin to softest brown
and smiled until the lines were etched into who you were.
Even on those days when I saw your down eyes,
I knew the lasting was only a small measure and would pass.
You took out the splinters with tweezers made of gold
and buried them in a place that I could not find,
not even with the measure that you gave me to keep me safe.

You planted those petunias until they became a part of you, remember?
And when spring spreads them into gardens
I see you bent over the dark earth with my legs and hips
and somehow we are melted into time that does not die
but opens like seasoning in the breeze across time,
a bloom that stays.

What a wonderful tribute.  I often fell like my father is a part of me when I am working in the garden.  He was as fond of flowers as he was of his vegatables.

Hugs,
Joe

Oh, Martie, this is so tenderly written, with memories of love!! My eyes welled up with tears longing for just one moment with my own mother....just one...      Chris

A lovely Mother's Day tribute, Martie...
When I write poetry, I feel as if my Dad is within me.
It was he, who taught me to write.
Your poem shows how much love you still have for your Mother.

Martie, I have to agree with my sister Chris here on wishing to spend just one more moment with our mother again...
both my sister and I were quite young with small children of our own when mom passed, at 46 years,....this piece brought back so many memories of her in the garden with her skin turning brown as a berry...and I am starting to ramble and tear up, so I will go now....
Love this piece and you Martie dear.

With just a pinch, the mote in the eye was removed:  carefully surgeoned with the care of a mother.  While we thought we were Summer, our experience was Winter, too young to be warmed by knowledge; too innocent to appreciate the passing of seasons.  And, when we saw the Spring sun for the first time in our adult life, knew wisdom for a fleeting moment, we watched our mothers glide effortlessly in the thick gelatin of Summer.  Someday, we shall learn that skill; but for now, we will remember the grace it took to languish in SummerLife.
