When An Old Man Dies

There he was, not the man I use
to run up to
be swept into his arms
to sit on his lap and listen to
an accent of far away once upons.
How when a small child
he crossed the ocean alone
to meet up with his family
to feel the freedom of the waves
before reaching our shores.
How he met her, fell in love
saw the first electric light,
transportation's evolution,
war after war and his children's
participation and return.

There he was, laying like a child,
curled in a fetal position,
the last time I saw him,
waiting for someone, anyone
to read his mind,
to know that inside he was volumes,
knowledge beyond imagination.
He was feelings, more than you could see
unless you looked into his eyes
and in their depths
you saw the pain of knowing.
His knowing that everything was inside
and there no longer was a key to
unlock it, and if there were,
by some magic, what other exciting experiences
would he have whispered in my wanting ears.
If only he knew ahead of time
that the only pages of his life
to be handed down
were those from his lips only,
maybe, just maybe I would have been
enlightened by the many more
that could be seen needing release
from pleading eyes.

I was reading your challenge and I too,  thought it can't be competed with the first response, but in actuality no one can compete with each other on this topic for every one will be a memory of someone they know, knew or loved...and to each it will be their best of thoughts...no matter how the words come down..
Thank you Karen for a chance to think about someone special to me.

This was very moving and brought back memories of my grandfather and great grandfather, both which I miss dearly. Enjoyed. Chris

M,
you painted such a vivid picture my heart was wrenched. Don't cry for the library burning though, rejoice that you were able to borrow  his books thoughout his lifetime.

Barry is right, Maureen...this one is a treasure, and you are right about the challenge...no one could compete with this memory, its way too precious.

Maureen, this piece is as priceless
as the memories of him you have shared so graciously.
